Elucidating the criteria for his recent political decision Bhikkhu parliamentarian Venerable Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera said that he had decided to support the presidential candidature of Ranil Wickremesinghe as he is deemed to be the only leader who is able to solve the ethnic problem.
He said although certain parties criticised him that he is supporting separation which is a misconception and added that he too will depart from Mr. Wickremesinghe if his activities lead to a division in the country
The venerable thera made this statement at a meeting held on Thursday (10) at Ratnapura town hall with the thera`s oblation ceremony which he called ?Rajabisheka Adhisthana pooja?
The Maha Sangha led by Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera went on begging from door to door from Ratnapura Mihindu Vidyalaya to Ratnapura town hall where dana was offered to the Maha Sangha.
Addressing the gathering the Thera said that the Maha Sangha went on begging from door to door in keeping with the tradition of the followers of Buddha. He said that throughout history the kings who were conformable to religion were blessed by the clergy. ?Countries like India, Malaysia and Indonesia were developed rapidly while our country remained stagnated. Realizing that the country cannot be developed merely by preaching we made an attempt to achieve that end through politics. Our original target was to send five Hela Urumaya Bhikkhus to parliament but many more were elected.
However, the attempt was not successful as decisions were taken by wrong persons.
?I made an evaluation of the plans and policies of the two presidential candidates and had come to a conclusion that Ranil Wickremesinghe is the most suitable leader to launch a National programme. Although the president had done a great deal for the sake of peace and the country`s development those who disrupted her work now rally round Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse. When Indo-Sri Lanka pact was signed by Rajiv Gandhi and-
J.R. Jayewardena they saw it as a move to divide the country and a betrayal. They sling mud on me which is a sin.
The State media would have identified me as an Arahath had I supported the government. I am not a member of any political party,? the Therea said.
