UNP Presidential candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday assured about 1,000 Muslim representatives that as President he would setup a separate Muslim affairs ministry if he is elected President to safeguard the rights of the country`s Muslim community.
Addressing the large gathering of Muslim leaders at an event organised by the UNP`s Muslim affairs committee, Mr. Wickremesinghe said the rights of the Muslim community had been disregarded since the government did not have a separate Muslim affairs ministry.
The UNP leader also vowed to develop Kalmunai making it the largest Muslim city in the east.Referring to the peace process, Mr. Wickremesinghe assured the rights of the Muslims would not be overlooked when pursuing a final solution.
?As a safeguard we will first have a referendum before arriving at a final solution. There is also a severe drop of law and order in the east so I will revamp the police force to control the situation,? he said.
Mr. Wickremesinghe also outlined proposed measure for the welfare of Muslims affected by the tsunami in the east.
