Opposition leader and UNP presidential candidate Ranil Wickremessinghe said in Jaffna Thursday (3) that the LTTE had complained that it lost 26 vessels in battle with the security forces during his tenure as prime minister.
In discussion with security forces and police personnel at the Palaly Military base Thursday, Wickremesinghe it was ironic that despite the security forces having achieved such success under his leadership his opponents keep accusing of trying to divide the country.
Wickremesinghe, warned that the time had come to resolve the ethnic issue peacefully and any delay would result in serious repercussions.
`Let me tell you in all seriousness that if we continue to remain divided we are finished .It is time that all unite in finding a peaceful and just peace that would be cherished by generations to come.`
He urged the establishment of a national identity that existed when the founding fathers created the national flag by incorporating both a tamil and muslim identity.
Commenting on the JVP, he said it wants the army disbanded since it wants to form its own army .
`Rohana Wijeweera himself called for the army to be disbanded and today Somawansa Amerasinghe keeps repeating it. This is not an idle threat it their ideology.`
Wickremesinghe, said that it was the army that prevented the JVP from achieving its ideological objectives and for that reason it holds a grudge against the army.
