Minister of Healthcare and Nutrition and Uva Wellassa Development Nimal Siripala de Silva has decided to absorb 2,250 casual and substitute workers into the permanent cadre by November 2. Interviews in this regard will be conducted during this week.
The Minister made this decision at a meeting held with the All Ceylon Health Services Union on Friday (21).
He assured the Health Trade Unions that the remaining 50 per cent of the Rupees 2,500 salary increase would be paid to them. He also stressed that there was no decision to prune this amount which was to be the base of the countrywide token strike due to take place on October 27.
The Minster warned the unions that he was ready for the strikers at any time, in the event they decided to proceed with the strike. He clarified that the 50 percent increase was anyway due only on 1 January 2006. He also said that the decision to increase salaries by another 50 per cent required approval from both the Ministry of Public Administration and the Tissa Devendra Presidential Commission.
He pointed out that the unions were also making a case to exploit the situation for political mileage, specially at a time where there was no decision to withhold the increase.
