The Central Environment Authority (CEA) is allegedly ignoring a blatant act of pollution of the Kandy lake with solid waste by a leading hotel in Kandy, which is sabotaging the multi million rupee project to rehabilitate the Kandy Lake.
The Irrigation Department has protested to the Kandy Municipal Council (KMC), regarding pollution of the lake by a leading hotel, which regularly drains solid waste matter into the lake while denying the procedure claiming they have purifying plant, found to be defective.
However, for the dredging of the lake bund for `Gambian walls`, the dredged lanes had been kept open to the rain over the weekend.
The hotel authorities, not aware of the open drains for `Gambian walls`, released the solid waste into the lake, which clogged the drains and the Irrigation Department had to stop all dredging operations and informed the KMC to take action.
The KMC had instructed the CEA to take legal action against the offending hotel. But todate, no action has been taken.
In the meantime, it is alleged that the Manager of the hotel had told authorities in Kandy that he does not fear anyone, while `dropping names of people in high places` and arrogantly stating that no action would be taken against them.
When the `Daily Mirror` contacted the Municipal Commissioner for her comments on the issue and what action the KMC would take, she said that they cannot take any action as this hotel has more rooms than the stipulated 40 rooms and hence, their hands are tied. She added that she had directed the CEA, by letter, to take action.
