Minister of Justice and Judicial Reforms W. D. J. Seneviratne said special commando training will be given to team of Prison officers and guards, who will in the future escort prisoners and remanded suspects, who are known to be members of underworld gangs,
He said it was decided to give a special security to such suspects after the shooting incident at Asgiriya, Gampaha where a prisons guard and a suspect died when an underworld gang ambushed a Black Maria, which was taking a number of prisoners who were due to attend a Magistrate court of the area.
Hereafter, the prisons vehicle will be escorted by a vehicle in which fully armed commando trained men will travel when prisoners are taken to courts.
He also said young people with a standard level of education are to be recruited for training as commando guards in the prisons service, with special emphasis on those who had taken part in sports. He also said the weapons issued to the prisons guards and officers were not modern sophisticated weapons but the criminal gangs had the most sophisticated types.
Minister Seneviratne said all theses factors were taken into consideration when the decision to train commando guards were made so that adequate security could be provided to prisoners when they are taken to Courts of law.
