Mannar Police arrested a suspect with a parcel of heroin worth over Rs 10 million on Saturday and found a lead to a large scale drug peddling network involved by the Colombo underworld and the LTTE.
On a tip off received by HQI Mannar Sudath Asmadala, a special police team nabbed the LTTE suspect with the heroin parcel while he was getting ready to leave for Colombo in a bus plying from Mannar at 1.30 pm.
The suspect, identified as S. Thambirasa of Kilinochchi, divulged that he was due to hand the parcel over to a businessman cum underworld character in Kochchikade area.
Police investigations found that the heroin was smuggled into the country from India using high speed boats and from Mannar it would be transported by LTTE suspects.
The suspect told police that he receives Rs 200,000 for transporting the contraband and had added that he had transported the drugs twice a week.
Mannar police said that the suspect was a former member of TELO and later joined the LTTE.
Several special units had been deployed to carry out further investigations, and the suspect would be handed over to Anuradhapura Police for interrogation.
