Today, on the 28th, the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court will reevaluate the case against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. This case, filed under the Public Property Act, accuses him of misusing government funds for a trip to London. The purpose of the trip was to attend a ceremony honoring his wife, Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe, at a university in Britain while he was in office. Ranil Wickremesinghe was taken into custody on August 22, 2025, after he went to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to provide a statement. He was later brought before the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court and held until August 26. After examining the medical reports submitted for him, Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura granted his release on three surety bails of Rs. 5 million each and postponed the case.
