A Sri Lankan man, S. Gunasekera, who worked as an associate professor at Ferris State University, is no longer with the school, according to a university official. This announcement follows Gunasekera's arrest on November 12 in Detroit by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). ICE claims he is an undocumented immigrant from Sri Lanka and has a history as a sex offender. After his arrest, Ferris State placed him on administrative leave, but this has now changed. Dave Murray, the associate vice president for marketing and communications at Ferris State, stated, “Professor Gunasekera is no longer with Ferris State University. It would be inappropriate to discuss a personnel issue.” ICE reports that Gunasekera first arrived in the United States in February 1998. He later went to Canada and came back to the U.S. on a student visa, according to the agency. The Department of Homeland Security explained that Gunasekera has tried to manipulate the immigration system multiple times, despite having past convictions in Canada that disqualified him from obtaining legal status in the U.S. One of these convictions occurred in November 1998 when he was found guilty in Ontario, Canada, of sexual interference with a minor and making threats to cause serious harm. He served one month in jail and was placed on probation for a year. Additionally, he was convicted of disorderly conduct in January 2004 after an incident in Las Vegas, Nevada.
