Two police officers from the Diyabeduma Police Station were taken into custody by Bribery Commission officers yesterday, November 11, after being accused of asking for a bribe of Rs. 5,000 from a motorcyclist. The officers, who work in the traffic division, were arrested following a complaint from a person in the Attanakadawala area. The Bribery Commission reported that on December 9, the officers stopped the complainant’s motorcycle and discovered he was riding without a valid driving license and revenue license, and was also under the influence of alcohol. Instead of following legal procedures, the officers kept the motorcycle's insurance document and the expired revenue license, demanding a bribe of Rs. 5,000 in exchange for their return. The suspects were arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) around 11:30 a.m. yesterday on the main road near Diyabeduma Sathipola, the weekly market. The arrested officers are set to appear in the Hingurakgoda Magistrate’s Court.
