LNP – Starlink internet service to launch for local customers after one-week inspection

The Starlink satellite internet service will be made available to local customers following a one-week inspection of the service, Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) Director General Bandula Herath said.

Speaking to the media, he said the TRCSL had issued the relevant licences in July 2024 to authorize the provision of Starlink satellite broadband services in the country. By December 2024, the Commission had granted approval for five main tariff packages.

“Over the past few months, several rounds of discussions were held between the TRCSL and Starlink Services, LLC to establish a framework for collecting data required for technological security and taxation. All the preliminary arrangements for this have now been finalized,” Herath said.

A total of 112 Starlink technical equipment units have already been imported into the country, with the first 12 units scheduled to be distributed to local consumers by the end of this week.

Once these units are distributed, the satellite internet service will be activated for those 12 consumers. Both the TRCSL and the Ministry of Defence will supervise the service during the initial operational period to monitor technical security standards and service quality.

Following this one-week supervision, the TRCSL will review the outcomes and take the necessary steps to facilitate the continued provision of Starlink services in the country.Â
