The Assistant Commissioner of the Anuradhapura Prison was arrested this afternoon (8) by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the ongoing probe into the misuse of the Presidential pardon.
Police said the arrest was made in connection with the Criminal Investigation Department’s investigation into the unauthorised use of the Presidential pardon to release an inmate.
The investigation was launched following a complaint filed by the Presidential Secretariat on June 6, alleging that unauthorised inmates had been released, in addition to those officially approved under the Presidential pardon programme.
It has been revealed that a number of inmates were illegally released under the guise of the Presidential Pardon granted for Vesak this year.
