LNP – Sigiriya becomes nation’s first sustainable destination

Sri Lanka’s tourism sector has reached a major sustainability milestone, with Sigiriya being officially declared as the country’s first sustainable destination.Â

The recognition follows the Cabinet approval and marks the culmination of a series of national-level initiatives that have built momentum since 2018.

The declaration of Sigiriya as a sustainable destination was enabled by a Destination Management Plan developed by the Asian Development Bank, which also includes measures to enhance the surrounding attractions in the iconic heritage site.

The landmark development is part of Sri Lanka’s broader push to embed sustainability at every level of tourism. Beginning with the introduction of the National Sustainable Tourism Certification in 2019, piloted with the certification of 37 hotels, efforts have since expanded to include destination and enterprise-level frameworks.

The internationally accredited Green Destinations body, in partnership with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), is playing a central role in shaping the roadmap.Â

Meanwhile, over 200 small and medium enterprises are now participating in the second round of the ‘Good Travel’ certification programme, supported by the UNDP BioFIN Project.

To further strengthen sustainability integration, the SLTDA has set up a dedicated Sustainable Tourism Unit, led by its deputy director general and rolled out a self-assessment tool in collaboration with Solidaridad Sri Lanka, enabling the industry stakeholders to evaluate and improve their practices.

“These achievements are the result of strong partnerships with numerous institutions,” the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau said in a statement, acknowledging support from government bodies, community groups and private sector associations.

With interest growing across provinces to replicate the Sigiriya model, the SLTPB said his is only the beginning of a long-term transformation aimed at building a resilient and inclusive industry.
