LNP – PM steps in to accelerate probe into tragic death of Kotahena child

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has taken action to ensure a swift and impartial investigation into the recent death of a child in Kotahena, following growing public concern over the handling of the case.

A high-level meeting was held today at the Prime Minister’s Office, bringing together the police investigation team and the grieving parents of the deceased child. The Prime Minister personally chaired the meeting and issued firm instructions for an accurate and unbiased inquiry into the incidents that allegedly took place both at the child’s school and at a tuition class.

“The safety and wellbeing of our children must be protected at all costs,” said Prime Minister Amarasuriya. “I have directed the police to leave no stone unturned in this investigation.”

She further revealed that the Ministry of Education is conducting an internal review to assess whether proper procedures were followed when the initial reports of the incident were received.

In response to identified shortcomings in the coordination among state institutions tasked with responding to child abuse cases, the Prime Minister announced the formation of a special three-member committee. The committee will be led by Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Asvini Fernando and will be responsible for monitoring and improving the efficiency of institutional responses to similar cases.

The meeting was also attended by several key ministers, including Dr. Nalinda Jayathissa, Minister of Health and Mass Media; Saroja Paulraj, Minister of Women and Child Affairs; and Ananda Wijayapala, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs.
