LNP – Sigiriya crowned World’s Most Welcoming City for 2025

Sigiriya has been crowned the world’s most welcoming city for 2025 by Booking.com, based on over 360 million of its verified customer reviews.

The online travel agency (OTA) named Sigiriya as a must-visit destination for travellers seeking authentic “off-the-beaten- path adventures” shaped by exceptional hospitality and service.

“From conquering the ascent to the fortress to embracing the tranquility of village life, Sigiriya presents an unforgettable blend of adventure and serenity,” Booking.com stated in its listing.

Located in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle (northern Matale District), Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its iconic 590-foot-tall rock fortress.

Built by King Kashyapa (AD 477–495), the ancient site is known to be one of the best-preserved examples of urban planning and architecture in its time.Â

Following King Kashyapa’s death, Sigiriya became a Buddhist monastery, remaining active until the 14th century.

Booking.com encouraged travellers to visit Sigiriya to witness what it described as “architectural brilliance of ancient Sri Lanka”.

The platform also highlighted the region’s rich cultural offerings, including traditional batik fabric, handicrafts, and ornamental potter and handloom textiles.

Additionally, the OTA recommended a jeep safari at the Minneriya National Park to firsthand witness spectacular gatherings of wild elephants.
