Sri Lanka Police arrested 2,728 suspects, including over 150 directly involved in drug trafficking and crimes, during a special operation that began on January 12.Â
The operation, launched on the instructions of the Acting Inspector General of Police, is focused on tackling crime and drug-related issues nationwide.
During the 10-day period, police checked 172,877 persons and 64,258 vehicles as part of the operation.Â
Police said these inspections are conducted as a special duty alongside regular traffic duties performed by officers.
Among those arrested, 167 individuals were identified as directly involved in criminal activities, while 2,561 suspects with pending court warrants were also arrested.Â
In addition, the police seized three T-56 firearms, three pistols and large quantities of drugs, including nearly 462 kgs of Kerala ganja, 15 kgs of hashish and 8 kgs of ICE narcotics.
Police said the operation aims to foster a safer society with minimal crime, allowing the public to live without fear or suspicion.
