Former Prime MinÂisÂter Ranil WickÂremesÂinghe yesÂterÂday expressed doubt that quarÂantÂine curfew will be lifÂted on OctoÂber 1 2021 but will be extenÂded furÂther given the situÂation perÂtainÂing to fuel supÂply.
SpeakÂing durÂing a panel disÂcusÂsion organÂised by the InterÂnaÂtional ChamÂber of ComÂmerce Sri Lanka, Mr. WickÂremesÂinghe said the lockÂdown will not be lifÂted on Oct. 1 due to reporÂted delays in purÂchasÂing diesel. †Re-openÂing of the counÂtry could be delayed till mid-octoÂber because of the delay in purÂchasÂing diesel for domestic use,†he said.
PerÂtainÂing to the issue of debt manÂageÂment in Sri Lanka, he said the most pressÂing conÂcern is addressÂing the dwindÂling forÂeign reserves in the counÂtry.
“The regional forÂeign exchange reserves are proÂjecÂted to increase over the course of the year, however, Sri Lanka’s forÂeign exchange reserves are on a downÂward trend,†he said in this regard.

He said the ecoÂnomic recovÂery based on a resurÂgence of the tourÂism industry will lead to uncerÂtainty, until airÂline ticket prices are reduced. “It is unlikely our tourÂist arrivals will recover as Sri Lanka is a budget tourÂism marÂket where low cost packÂages with limÂited facilÂitÂies are offered,†he said.
