A team from the Criminal Investigation Department has commenced investigations in Jaffna with the aim of apprehending those responsible for aiding and abetting in the attempt by the mastermind of the gang rape and murder, of a schoolgirl in Pungudutivu, to flee.
This was confirmed by Police Media Spokesman, Superintendent of Police Ruwan Gunasekara yesterday.
Mahalingam Shashikumar, alias Swiss Kumar, who was the ninth suspect in the case, was subsequently convicted, along with six others, in a Trial-at-Bar, at the Jaffna High Court, after being indicted on charges of plotting, abduction, rape, murder, aiding and abetting, and unlawful assembly amongst other such offences.
Previously, former Deputy Inspector General of Police Lalith Jayasinghe was arrested for helping Swiss Kumar flee.
