Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says the present government has strengthened the parliamentary democracy through the enactment of several Acts.
Addressing the house, the Prime Minister said the enactment of the 19th Constitutional Amendment paved the way for the establishment independent commissions.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said the incumbent government established a number of independent commissions and strengthened the powers vested with the Parliament adding that additionally through steering committees, finance committees and the platform provided to ask the prime minister questions, the powers vested in parliament have been fuelled.
The Premier said through the proposal tabled today he believes an era of prosperity will prevail adding that the country hasn’t succeeded in terms of achieving prosperity in the past 70 years, which is why at times when the country can be proud of its achievements a hint of resentment lingers.
The Premier noted that through the span of 60 years racial disparity prevailed in the island, a war prevailed amongst a host of divisions.
The Premier said however democracy was protected at all times and to this date political solutions and unity can be obtained.
