Sri Lankaâs Disaster Management Center (DMC) said on Sunday there was no tsunami threat to the island country following a 6.5 magnitude earthquake which struck off Indonesiaâs Sumatra.
The DMC had earlier in the day issued a tsunami warning for all the coastal areas in Sri Lanka as news of the earthquake reached Colombo.
However, spokesperson for the DMC Pradeep Kodippili said the tsunami warning had been lifted and residents had been urged not to panic.
âThe coastal areas of Sri Lanka are declared safe and those evacuated to safe areas may now return to their usual places,â Sri Lankaâs National Tsunami Early Warning Centre said in a statement.
â The public is further informed that this withdrawal is announced in consultation with relevant national and international agencies,â the statement added.
