CT Sports: After both Marathoners flopped, Sri Lankan hopes will now lie in their Javelin Thrower Waruna Lakshan and 800m runner Nimali Liyanarachchi. They will be seen in action tonight at the IAAF World Championship in London.
Neither of them are expected to win a medal in their respective events, especially with Nimali running with a minor injury and she needs specialized shoes, but both will be eyeing to improve on their performances, which can be categorized as a win in itself for the small island nation they represent.
To get into the final 12 of his event Waruna will need to rematch his personal best performance which he threw in April (or more), while Nimali too will have to run just as she did in April and clock below 2 minutes and 03 seconds in the event, which will give her a chance to advance.
Waruna Lakshan will compete in his qualifiers at 11.35 p.m. and Nimali will be in action 20 minutes later on the same day at 11.55 p.m. in the women’s 800m heats. Nimali received automatic qualification as the continental winner when she won the 800m gold medal at the Asian Championship which concluded last month. Earlier the two marathoners Anuradha Indrajith Cooray and Hiruni Wijayarathne gave up mid way. (AK)
