Senior DIG Lalith Jayasinghe further remanded

Senior DIG Lalith Jayasinghe has been further remanded till the August 08 after being produced at the Kayts Magistrates Court.

He was arrested by the CID on July 15 for allegedly helping a suspect in the murder of schoolgirl Sivaloganathan Vidya in Jaffna to evade arrest.

A bail application submitted on behalf of the defendant, when the case was taken up today (25), was rejected by magistrate M.M. Riyal, who ordered that he be further remanded.

The attorneys representing the Senior DIG also submitted a pen drive containing a video file to the court, which they claim proves that it was a prominent politician from Jaffna who had attempted to save the arrested suspect.

The magistrate ordered the Criminal Investigations Department to carry out an investigation regarding the said video and submit a report to the court.

The 18-year-old student from Pungudutivu was abducted, raped and murdered while returning from school on May 13, 2015.

The incident sparked wide-spread condemnation and protests especially in her hometown of Jaffna while 9 suspects were arrested and indicted over the murder.

The chief suspect in the case, Mahalingam Shashikumar, was captured by residents in the area and handed over to the authorities, however he was later released by Kayts Police.

This had resulted in a tense situation involving villagers and police officers while a large number of people were arrested over the unrest.
