he Colombo Crimes Division is getting ready to arrest all those who obstructed its officers who tried to arrest convener of the Medical Faculty Students’ Action Committee Ryan Jayalath at the Government Medical Officers’ Association premises last week.
CCD sources said that they had reported the incident to court.
IGP Pujith Jayasundara, contacted for comment, said that it was a serious offence to obstruct policemen attempting to arrest a warranted person. Those who obstructed the arrest and helped the suspect to escape. Action would be taken against those who obstructed the duty irrespective of their position, Jayasundara said.
Police sources said the CCD had obtained the video footage of the incident.
Those who obstructed told the media that they had prevented a group of thugs who arrived in a white van from abducting Medical Faculty Students Action Committee Convener Ryan Jayalath.
However, the Police Spokesman later told media that the incident occurred when a posse of policemen attached to the CCD attempted to arrest Jayalath against whom several arrest warrants had been issued by courts.
