Two individuals have been arrested over the possession of the explosive substance, ‘Water gel’, in the Mullaitivu area.
‘Water gel’ explosives are commonly used in fishing practices and are not legally allowed in the country due to the devastating effect it has on the marine life and environment.
Police stated that the two individuals were arrested near the Kokkuthuduwai beach by Navy personnel attached to the Nayaru sub division in Mullaitivu.
Twenty five plastic bundles of the explosive substance were taken into police custody.
The suspects have been identified as a 21 and 37 year-old from the Palmudei area.
Mullaitivu Police have begun further investigations on the matter, while the suspects will be presented to the Mullaitivu Magistrate’s Court today (10).
