History of Jaffna - Part 2..:)
Wednesday, 4 July 2012 - 7:36 AM SL Time

Take a look at that 17th century Dutch map Kaart van Jaffanapatnam en onderhoorige landen en eilanden (Map of Jaffanapatnam countries and islands and dependencies). The manuscript is in the Nationaal Archief, Netherlands, but you can get a fairly large view at beeldbank.nationaalarchief.nl/na:col1:dat516410. Certain browsers let you translate the web page into English. Get it full screen and start spotting the Sinhala place names.

The first name to hit you is Welligamo. As one of the four main divisions of Jaffanapatnam, it`s written larger. No big news there. Everyone knows about Valikamam and Weligama, but everyone may not know the transition happened post 17th century. The real revelations are the smaller print locations Cottiewatte, Watane, Vimangamo, Walandale, Lilagamo, Tangode, Tambale, Batecotte, Anecotte, Naloer(Nal oya), Oergavature, Nagamoene, Tambegamo, Coylacandy (Kohila Kanda), Mepale, Pollopalle, Alipalle, Malwattoe, Anungay, Walewitakepoelo, etc. etc. These are just the ones that stand out without ambiguity to my naked eye on the computer screen. I`d love to have someone with an eye for handwritten script and etymological expertise subject the manuscript to a magnifying glass.

Our children are under threat
Monday, 9 July 2012 - 8:20 AM SL Time

Not too long after the historic defeat of the LTTE, President Mahinda Rajapaksa made a claims He said `parapuraka aadambara thaaththa mamai` (I am the proud father of an entire generation).

The claim was not based on an opinion poll. And yet, both resonated well with the general public, considering the context. He had, after all, presided over and given political direction to secure what was thought to be impossible to obtain. And again, as is usually the case, as time went by, the claims and especially the second, were lampooned. Political fortunes are never constant there are ups and downs, missteps and slips.

Godawaya: an ancient port city..and how EElamists twist the history..:)
Thursday, 12 July 2012 - 4:38 PM SL Time

My first visit to Godawaya was in 1998, as an undergraduate who participated in the archaeological excavation at the temple premises. The excavation was conducted by the Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka and the German K.A.W.A. project. After a series of explorations and excavations from 1994, we were excavating the old image house area inside the temple. (Figure 02) A significant inscription found from this temple gives an idea about its history (Figure 03). A small and unclear inscription (No 01) and well-known inscription (No 02) found from this temple were first examined and reported by E.R. Ayortone in early 20th century. Later in 1930 professor Senarath Paranavitana read, prepared estampages and published these. (Paranavithana, S. 1983) The main and clear inscription carved on a natural rock north to the Stupa state clearly about a seaport situated at Godawaya.

Reemus Fernando

reporting from London

Underdog Niluka Karunaratne stunned world number eight in the biggest upset so far in the 2012 Olympics badminton competition as he beat Kenichi Tago of Japan in straight sets in the men`s singles first round match at Wembley Arena here in London yesterday. In what experts termed a battle between mental strengths, Niluka knocked out the champion Japanese from the first round.
