Pakistan 488 for 4 (Hafeez 196, Ali 157, Herath 2-143) v Sri Lanka
The Colombo weather hurt Pakistan`s push for a result, allowing only 44.2 overs on the second day, during which the visitors added 154 for 3 to their overnight 334. It could have been worse for Pakistan after the slow start they made to the day, but their batsmen showed more urgency as the clouds gathered.

Rain returns to hurt chances of result
The Report by Sidharth Monga
July 2, 2012
Sri Lanka 70 for 1 (Dilshan 46*, Junaid 1-22) trail Pakistan 551 for 6 dec. (Hafeez 196, Ali 157, Misbah 66*, Herath 3-165) by 481 runs
Afternoon showers on day three put an outright result in serious doubt as only one session could be played out. In that session, Pakistan added 63 to their overnight 488 before declaring. In the next 70 minutes, Sri Lanka were put through a sterner test than the Pakistan openers, but they lost just one wicket.

Sangakkara, Dilshan take Sri Lanka close to safety
The Report by Sidharth Monga

Sri Lanka 278 for 5 (Sangakkara 144*, Dilshan 121, Junaid 3-56) trail Pakistan 551 for 6 dec by 273 runs
Rain fell from the sky, records fell by the wayside, but in all likelihood the wickets fell too late in the day. A wet outfield in the morning and obligatory showers in the afternoon meant a result was the farthest thing on people`s minds despite four strikes towards the end of the day, inspired by a spirited burst from Junaid Khan. The prospects of a result have been so bleak that, surreally, even the steel bands have given this Test a miss.

Rain a factor in `lively` Pallekele
The Preview by Siddhartha Talya
July 7, 2012
Match facts
July 8-July 12, Pallekele
Start time 1000 (0430 GMT)
Big Picture
Sri Lanka in June and July is greener, even more beautiful and the lush hills form a stunning backdrop to the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, the host of two rain-affected Tests. The third one starting on Sunday, after some menacing rain the day before, will be lucky to get away unscathed. Amid the inevitable concerns about the weather this time of the year, there remains the promise of a more `sporting` pitch at this venue, the unforgiving SSC having yet again shown its contempt for bowlers.

Sri Lanka v Pakistan, 3rd Test, Pallekele, 1st day - Match even after bowlers dominate

The Report by Siddhartha Talya
July 8, 2012
Sri Lanka 44 for 3 (Junaid 2-15) trail Pakistan 226 (Shafiq 75, Misbah 40, Perera 4-63) by 182 runs
pic: Junaid Khan`s double-wicket spell boosted Pakistan in the last session Getty Images
The SSC and Pallekele could well be on two different continents, such was the contrast in the nature of their pitches. After the highway at the SSC last week, the moisture in the Pallekele pitch - increased by the rain before the Test - and a hint of grass gave Sri Lanka`s attack early encouragement that lasted into the final session, justifying the home team`s decision to bowl first. The new ball was a powerful weapon, employed expertly by Thisara Perera and Nuwan Kulasekara, who also stood out for their stamina and helped their team have the better of most of the first day.

Rain returned to haunt this Test series after the promise of an exciting game in Pallekele on the first day, when the bowlers dominated and the teams finished even. But the threat of poor weather would always remain at the venue. It had rained before the Test and early on the second day as well. A short sunny spell an hour before the start gave hope that was crushed when the showers returned, grew heavy and ensured a washout.

Sri Lanka v Pakistan, 3rd Test, Pallekele, 3rd day - Attacking Perera gives Sri Lanka control
Wednesday, 11 July 2012 - 9:18 AM SL Time
|
The Report by Siddhartha Talya
July 10, 2012
Pic: Tharanga Paranavitana and Thilan Samaraweera fought hard for over three hours Associated Press
Pakistan 226 and 27 for 1 (Hafeez 8*, Azhar 6*) trail Sri Lanka 337 (Paranavitana 75, Perera 75, Samaraweera 73, Junaid 5-70) by 84 runs
Sri Lanka took a significant step in their attempt to thwart Pakistan from levelling this rain-affected series, through a combination of dogged batting on a testing pitch, a fair amount of luck, and aggression. Pakistan contributed much to that luck through sloppy fielding, when an urgent quest for wickets was the need of the hour after a rained-out second day.

Sri Lanka v Pakistan, 3rd Test, Pallekele, 4th day - Sri Lanka in control despite Ali ton
Thursday, 12 July 2012 - 9:17 AM SL Time

The Report by Siddhartha Talya
July 11, 2012
pic: Asad Shafiq`s second half-century of the match helped Pakistan stretch their lead Getty Images
Pakistan 226 and 299 for 8 (Ali 136, Shafiq 55*, Hafeez 52) lead Sri Lanka 337 by 188 runs
Pakistan showed how tough a challenge coming from behind in a Test can prove. Even though they erased the deficit of 111 runs with relative ease, their position in the match was never secure. Even in conditions in which the assistance to bowlers had reduced drastically, the Pakistan batsmen struggled to perform collectively. Azhar Ali`s solid, determined century was the glue that held their innings together, but even he, despite having batted over six hours and taken the lead past 150, was not immune against a seemingly harmless delivery that got him out. On a day that began with Pakistan needing to bat positively to set a competitive target, Sri Lanka moved ahead with a good chance of winning the series 2-0, though a test against a strong bowling attack awaits them.

Mahela Jayawardene on why Sri Lanka decided to settle for a draw in Pallekele, and the factors that helped his side beat Pakistan
Mahela Jayawardene
July 14, 2012
pic: Mahela Jayawardene: `Nobody gave us a chance.` AFP
Some people have argued that we weren`t ambitious enough to push for a win in the Pallekele Test to seal the series 2-0 instead of 1-0. We would have loved to finish with a memorable victory, but unfortunately that was not possible in the end. Nevertheless, we came out on top against Pakistan, who had beaten the No.1 Test side in the world (England) 3-0, by playing positive cricket in tough situations. Nobody gave us a chance, even in the one-day series. I still remember the press conference at the start of the series, when a couple of Pakistan journalists asked Misbah-ul-Haq if they were going to win the series 3-0, 3-1 or 4-1. Even before the Test series nobody gave us a chance.

`It`s the start of the season for us,` Dhoni said on Wednesday, shortly after India had arrived in Colombo for the five ODIs and one-off Twenty20 against Sri Lanka. `There are certain areas where we`ve wanted to improve, where we`ve had a discussion saying these are the areas where we need to improve upon to consistently do well This is a nice occasion to test how much we have improved and how much further we can actually improve on the field.`

South Africa surge after Amla`s triple hundred
The Report by Andrew McGlashan
July 22, 2012
England 385 and 102 for 4 (Bell 14*, Bopara 15*) trail South Africa 637 for 2 dec (Amla 311*, Kallis 182*) lead by 150 runs
South Africa enjoyed the type of day teams dream of which ended with England staggering on 102 for 4 after being overwhelmed by the insatiable hunger of two batsmen. Hashim Amla scored the country`s first triple century in Tests, building an overwhelming stand of 377 with Jacques Kallis, as South Africa amassed a lead of 252. The visitors then made major inroads into a dispirited England side who lurched to the close with a huge task ahead to leave The Oval with the series level.

Pace of pitch, not rashness, cost India - Dhoni
Abhishek Purohit in Hambantota
July 24, 2012
It was that kind of day for India. The first ball Virat Kohli chased outside off stump, he edged to the wicketkeeper. The first ball Rohit Sharma inside-edged, he played on. Ditto Suresh Raina. Virender Sehwag departed courtesy an outstanding return-catch by Thisara Perera. Before they knew it, India were 41 for 4. Soon, before the floodlights had come on in the Hambantota jungle, India had been bowled out for 138 in 33.3 overs, their fourth-lowest ODI total in the past five years. The three lowest have also come in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka will be the more confident of the two sides after the nine-wicket hiding they dished out to India in the previous outing, but India have a superior record at the Premadasa, where the heat and humidity and shorter boundaries will feel more comfortable after blustery Hambantota.

Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene said that although Kumar Sangakkara`s injury was unfortunate, it was good in a way as it allowed Sangakkara an overdue break from cricket ahead of the World Twenty20 tournament in September. `He hasn`t had a break for nearly two years so if you look at it that way, it`s unfortunate but he gets a deserving break. Hopefully he will get fit for the World Cup [World Twenty20],` Jayawardene said.

India`s win on Saturday has left Sri Lanka needing to win both remaining matches if they are to take the series.
