One of Sri Lanka`s top naval officers has fled to Canada but federal officials are refusing to accept his refugee claim on the grounds he was complicit in war crimes during the troubled island`s long civil war against Tamil rebels.
Nadarajah Kuruparan was Commodore of the Sri Lanka Navy, third in rank behind the Admiral, when he retired in June 2009 just weeks after his forces helped defeat the separatist Tamil Tigers in a conflict that left untold civilians dead.

Norway Goes Secular, Removes State Religion
Tuesday, 3 July 2012 - 8:32 PM SL Time
|
OSLO Norway, which is one of few developed countries to still have a state religion, passed a another hurdle May 31st to separate the Protestant Lutheran Church from the state, parliament said.
The move, which requires changes to Norway`s constitution, was approved by parliament a second time Thursday, in what was a formality after lawmakers voted through with overwhelming support on Monday, with 161 votes in favour and just three opposing votes.
When parliamentarians were asked to confirm that result on Thursday, no one was opposed, parliament spokesman Torodd Noreng told AFP, pointing out that this meant the initial vote was confirmed and parliament would begin making the necessary changes to the constitution.

Elusive particle found, looks like Higgs Boson
Thursday, 5 July 2012 - 10:47 AM SL Time
|
Scientists at the world`s biggest atom smashing facility near here claimed the discovery of a new subatomic particle on Wednesday. They found it to be consistent with the long-sought Higgs boson, popularly known as the God particle that helps explain what gives size and shape to all matter in the universe.
We have now found the missing cornerstone of particle physics, Rolf Heuer, Director of the European Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN), told scientists amid cheers and standing ovation. As a layman, I think we did it, he said. We`ve a discovery. We`ve observed a new particle that is consistent with a Higgs boson.

More South Asian Physicists Whose Critical Contributions That Led to The Breakthrough
Friday, 6 July 2012 - 1:20 PM SL Time
|
KARACHI: Few Pakistanis know what the Higgs boson is and even fewer realise that some of the earliest theoretical groundwork that led to this discovery was laid by Pakistan`s only Nobel laureate, Dr Abdus Salam.
The Higgs boson is a subatomic particle whose existence was confirmed by the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (known by its French acronym, CERN) on July 4. The discovery of the particle provides the last remaining bit of empirical evidence necessary for the Standard Model of physics, which seeks to explain the existence of all forces in the universe except gravity.
