The interview of the Defense Secretary Mr. Gotabaya Rajapakse with the editor of the Sunday Leader on the airlifting of a dog deserves comment not because of anything surprising contained in the interview. Its importance lies in its banality. It reveals something that has come to be quite common and ordinary in the day-to-day experience in Sri Lanka.
Threats about killings, killing by the people, reference to journalists as `shit eating pigs`, use of dirty words (kunuharapa) and the statement that he does not care about the courts, are all too common things people have all got used to. It all reveals what has come be today`s political culture in the country.

Mahela Jayawardene secured the 1-0 series win with a defensive game plan.
Mahela Jayawardene is a good batsman and comes across as a thoughtful, astute cricketer in most of his public pronouncements. It was with some surprise therefore that I read his article this morning justifying Sri Lanka`s decision to call off the chase in their last Test against Pakistan, thus earning themselves a 1-0 win, but generating considerable angst among many cricket fans. (The reaction to this decision is similar, in some regards, to that generated by India`s calling off a chase against the West Indies in Dominica last year. There are some interesting differences as well: India were playing away against a weak team, Sri Lanka were playing at home against a weaker team as well, but one always capable of surprises.)

India is Sri Lanka`s largest trading partner. It is also the third largest market for Sri Lanka, after the European Union and the United States. However, in the recent years, particularly after the implementation of the ISFTA (Indo-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement), the bilateral trade balance has significantly increased in India`s favour.

United National Party Parliamentarian, Karu Jayasuriya says that an act of intimidation by a government minister against the Magistrate of Mannar to change a verdict and an unsuccessful attempt by the same Minister to transfer the Magistrate, clearly indicates the evil effects of the present administration and that the country is heading towards anarchy.
Issuing a communiqe Jayasuriya pointed out that it is a representative of the executive who had taken the law unto himself and created an unruly mob opposite the court premises, using his henchmen to attack the Courts Complex.
