The Resistible Rise of Asia?
Wednesday, 2 May 2012 - 11:45 PM SL Time

NEW DELHI A favorite theme in international debate nowadays is whether Asia`s rise signifies the West`s decline. But the current focus on economic malaise in Europe and the United States is distracting attention from the many serious challenges that call into question Asia`s continued success.
CommentsTo be sure, today`s ongoing global power shifts are primarily linked to Asia`s phenomenal economic rise, the speed and scale of which have no parallel in world history. With the world`s fastest-growing economies, fastest-rising military expenditures, fiercest resource competition, and most serious hot spots, Asia obviously holds the key to the future global order.

Politics, Public Funds And Discretion
Thursday, 3 May 2012 - 5:35 PM SL Time

By Ravi Perera

The Roman emperors walked a tightrope, pretending to be merely first among peers when dealing with the aristocracy, commander-in-chief when dealing with the army, and godlike when dealing with parts of the empire that expected their rulers to be numinous. They substituted a god-when- I`m-dead strategy for the old god for-a-day compromise: emperors were merely outstanding men until they died, the theory held, whereupon they were clutched to the bosoms of divinities. Some, like the emperor Vespasian, found it ridiculous as he collapsed, dying, he joked with his courtiers, I think I am becoming a god - Ian Morris (Why the West Rules )

Crucial challenges for MR in victory month

Swaraj briefs Singh on visit India`s ruling party and main opposition take common stand on Lanka
Snap polls in some provinces to show the world that people are still with the Govt.

By Our Political Editor
Some of the bitter truths delivered to UPFA leaders by the visiting Indian parliamentary delegation just two weeks ago have now begun to unravel.

This was after the delegation head and India`s opposition leader Sushma Swaraj met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on her return to New Delhi to brief him on the visit. Unbelievable but true. This was the most unusual meeting for Ms. Swaraj, who heads the Bharathiya Janatha Party (BJP) in the Lok Sabha. She was reporting to Premier Singh that her delegation`s mission, to project India`s latest foreign policy objectives towards Sri Lanka, had been accomplished. There was no discordant note and both were on the same page.

Cost of living: Blow after blow
Sunday, 6 May 2012 - 4:12 AM SL Time

Sri Lankans must be a patient lot, at least when it comes to bearing the pangs of the rising cost of living. Didn`t the Buddha, whose birth, demise and enlightenment millions of Buddhists the world over marked yesterday, say that one of the greatest prayers is patience?

And is there a more appropriate time than the eve of Vesak -- when the teachings of the Buddha bring tranquility to the mind and reassert the virtues of patience and when pandals, lanterns and other attractions make people forget the crisis gripping the economy, to raise the prices of gas, milk food and cement? Of course, these price hikes follow many a shocking hike in prices of fuel, electricity rates, wheat flour and other essential items.

By Shenali Waduge

Three years has passed since the heroic armed forces eliminated terrorism enabling Sri Lankly to proudly go down in history as the only country to have eliminated terrorism and an internationally banned terrorist organization.

With that achievement the country looked forward to a future that should have been strategically planned by our legislators in governance. The baton is now with the legislators to lead the country. It was a pastime of previous governments to use the excuse of the conflict to explain their inability to solve issues that plagued the nation. The war is now over yet we are a nation concerned about where we are heading.

European Voters Have Rejected Austerity So What Happens Next?
Thursday, 10 May 2012 - 6:52 PM SL Time

A woman begs for money in Milan, Italy, Tuesday, May 8, 2012

So voters in France and Greece sent an inescapable signal to the euro zone: No more austerity. In doing so, they showed that the average guy on the street understands economics better than the people in power. Rather than reducing debt and returning the European economy to health, the all-austerity approach to solving the debt crisis was sending the weaker economies of Europe into a death spiral of recession, unemployment, and ultimately, continued strain on national finances.

(U)nfriendly Fire
Friday, 11 May 2012 - 5:11 PM SL Time

BY DR DAYAN JAYATILLEKA

( May 11, 2012, Paris, Sri Lanka Guardian) An axiom of professional journalism is that comment is free but facts are sacred. Another is that a story must have balance, in that facts must be checked by getting in touch with all sides to the story, notably the main protagonists.

Minister G.L. ( File Photo)

I fear that a Colombo newspaper has failed to observe either norm, in a story entitled `(Un) diplomatic spring cleaning` in the column `People and Politics` carried prominently on May 10th 2012 in its editorial page, under the by-line of (Ms) Darisha Bastians.

BERLIN, May 10 (Reuters) - A man who announced his change of address in a local newspaper sparked national media attention on Thursday due to the unusual location of his `new home` - six feet under the ground.

Karl Albrecht, who died last month at the age of 88, penned the obituary himself in the style of a moving notice, inviting friends to a `lively` celebration at his new lodgings in a cemetery in Hamburg, northern Germany.

A dog s life can be the greatest thing in the world (or at least in Britain)
Sunday, 13 May 2012 - 4:48 AM SL Time

Is it because more and more people have access to cable television and almost unlimited numbers of channels? The fact is that for the leading channels in various countries it`s becoming more and more important to synchronize their musical shows with their main competitors. Not convinced? Here a good example of tonight:

ITV1 / U.K. with the final of Britain`s got talent
and followed by
TF1 / France with the final of The Voice
Bet you that in a couple of month (after the summer holidays) we will have the opposite for French got talent and The Voice U.K.

Foreign policy blunders making Sri Lanka a laughing stock, Washington maintains tough stance

By Our Political Editor
Battle tanks, artillery, rockets and rifles that boomed to militarily defeat Tiger guerrillas and the men behind them will go on parade next Saturday, a reminder for Sri Lankans and the world outside, for a third year in succession, how a separatist war was won.

This time, however, the event assumes greater significance. By an unexpected co-incidence, just a day ahead, Sri Lanka and the world`s only superpower, the United States, will be locked in discussions over matters which are the direct outcome of the military campaign. This is when External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris and the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hold bi-lateral talks. They come in the wake of the US-backed resolution against Sri Lanka adopted at the UN Human Rights Council in March.

World Migratory Bird Day
Monday, 14 May 2012 - 11:21 PM SL Time

More than three decades ago, Sri Lanka`s once prolific bird population roamed free in their natural habitats. From the jungles of Vanni to Udawattakele in Kandy, from the coastal belt of Puttlam to the marshes in Hambantota and Kumana, they could be found in large numbers and many different species in forests, marshes, hills and plains, valleys, and villus as well as in towns, cities and home gardens. Their numbers and variety of species were vast enough to be mind boggling. New species of both resident and migrant birds were discovered by a growing number of bird-watchers both local and foreign.

More cons than pros of India s unfriendly vote against Sri Lanka

IDN-InDepth NewsViewpoint

NEW DELHI (IDN) - There are times on the world stage when statesman and diplomats stoop to conquer. And, there are times when Indian diplomats take the moral high ground only to emerge as losers. India voting in favour of the US-sponsored resolution on war crimes in Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHCR) in Geneva on March 22 falls in the latter category.

My dear Hillary Clinton,
I thought of writing to you since you are meeting our genial External Affairs Minister, Geneva Lost Peiris this week. I am sure it will be an exciting meeting since our two countries have been trading insults recently over your decision to sponsor a resolution against us in Geneva.

Even though we have been berating each other and even though yours is the most powerful nation on earth and we are a very small island, Hillary, I think our two countries have had a lot in common in recent times. Why, both our countries were battling terrorism, weren`t we?

Donna Summer s last dance
Friday, 18 May 2012 - 1:31 AM SL Time

By Bernadette McNulty
6:50PM BST 17 May 2012
In a review of disco star Candi Staton`s gig in London earlier this month, I wrote at the end that we should cherish the magic of the 72-year-old while we can. I hardly meant to be prophetic and the news today that Donna Summer, a fellow star of the glitterball-era and nearly a decade younger has died, is a shock.
Probably because in my head she will always be the ever-young, sexy diva singing with her head back, eyes closed in some kind of ecstasy, lips quivering over the microphone as her arms swing out like wings by her side the woman who made disco really swing.

Three Years After War s End, Sri Lanka Is Only Beginning to Make Peace
Friday, 18 May 2012 - 3:15 PM SL Time

By Amantha Perera / Colombo | May 18, 2012

A woman and her child ride past a ruined building and a billboard in the town of Kilinochchi, Sri Lanka, on Sept. 7, 2011
When war returned to the Vanni, the vast swath of land in Sri Lanka`s north, it came quickly and left just as fast. For over three decades as Tamil militants fought successive Sri Lankan governments seeking an independent Tamil homeland in the north, the Vanni was the main, bloody battleground. Then, from April 2008 to May `09, it all changed suddenly as the Sri Lankan government launched multipronged attacks on the areas held by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, popularly known as the Tamil Tigers, dislodging them for good.

Three Years on, Reconciliation is getting too late
Saturday, 19 May 2012 - 4:44 AM SL Time

by Dr Laksiri Fernando

When the government moved the army decisively against the LTTE in July 2006, it did the right thing, and there was no other viable alternative left. The peace process since February 2002 was not working and the LTTE was making a mockery of the peace effort by amassing arms and ammunition and blatantly violating the ceasefire agreement (CFA).

The end of the war did not see the resurgence of democracy as expected. Instead, blatant violations of freedom expression, human rights and coercion of dissent by `white van syndrome` were prevalent. If not for the international pressure, including the recent resolution by the UN HRC, the situation would have been much worse.

May 19 another missed opportunity to show the Nation s commitment to reconciliation
Saturday, 19 May 2012 - 7:58 PM SL Time

The Sri Lankan economy is going through a very difficult period and I let you judge on your own the need for organizing such a big military parade at the expense of our poor tax payers. There is another important aspect that should also be taken into consideration.

Didn`t we just miss another opportunity to strengthen our national unity and identity? Of course the large majority of us are very happy that the war is over, but this date could have been more than what it says in its official title, which by the way must have a very unpleasant sound in the ears of our compatriots in the North / North-East and it also reminds us others of a very dark period in Sri Lankan history.

I thought I would write to you once again because by now, you must be counting the hours for your release and eagerly waiting to savour the freedom you so longed for. I must congratulate you not only for that but also for not asking for a pardon for nearly two years in the face of severe pressure and a significant risk to your health.

That shouldn`t surprise us, of course. You were someone who had enough courage to take on the Tigers when everyone else was shaking their heads and saying that it couldn`t be done and then you completed the job too within just a few years.

He said Mr. Fonseka was released under a special decree issued by President Mahinda Rajapaksa last Friday by virtue of the constitutional powers vested in him and added that by granting a remission Mr. Fonseka did not have to serve the full sentence.

The presidential pardon to General Sarath Fonseka (officially it is `ex-General` as he has been stripped of his hard earned rank) after he completed only two years of a three-year jail sentence should come as no surprise.

As things happen in the Island nation, the idea touched off speculations on when and how he will be released. Of course, there was a lot of build up before it really happened with the perennial political go-between Tiran Alles MP took up the General`s case for pardon with his one time pal - the President. And the former Army Chief comes up once again in national focus with the speculation on what is he going to do?

28 May 2012

NEW HAVEN Asian authorities were understandably smug in the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008-2009. Growth in the region slowed sharply, as might be expected of export-led economies confronted with the sharpest collapse in global trade since the 1930`s. But, with the notable exception of Japan, which suffered its deepest recession of the modern era, Asia came through an extraordinarily tough period in excellent shape.

After Nearly a Quarter-Century of Isolation, Burma s Suu Kyi Begins Her Global Tour
Thursday, 31 May 2012 - 4:23 AM SL Time

Airport security crowded the fast-track immigration section at Bangkok`s Suvarnabhumi Airport on the evening of May 29. Thailand`s Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra had arrived home shortly before from a trip to Australia. But the throngs of excited onlookers were not there to greet Thailand`s first female Prime Minister, who was on her way back from meeting Australia`s own first female Prime Minister, Julia Gillard. Instead, they had gathered after word trickled out that another lady leader had touched down in Bangkok. Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma`s iconic opposition leader, was making her first trip overseas in 24 years. Under house arrest for much of that time at the behest of the country`s then ruling generals, Suu Kyi had traded a globe-trotting youth spent in India, England, the U.S., Bhutan and Japan for the moldering confines of her family`s lakeside villa in Burma`s largest city, Rangoon.

Will developers be able to serve users on any platform?

CommentsThese questions are not new. Fifteen years ago, in the United States at least, it was America Online (now AOL) that was closing the Internet. Millions of people were relying on it for Internet service and content. Today, AOL`s purported control of the Internet looks like a joke, but it was considered a real threat at the time.
