US Official To Visit India To Prepare For Strategic Dialogue

WASHINGTON: US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman is travelling to India next week to hold discussions with her Indian counterparts on a wide range of issues including Iran and the up-coming US-India Strategic Dialogue in Washington.

During her four day India trip, Sherman besides her meetings in New Delhi would make a trip to Patna - the first by such a high-ranking US official to Bihar on April 3.

In New Delhi, Sherman will meet with the Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai and other senior Indian officials to discuss preparations for the US-India Strategic Dialogue, to be held in Washington DC in mid-June, the State Department said in a statement.

Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Monday hailed a `new era` for Myanmar and called for a show of political unity after her party claimed victory in elections seen as a test of budding reforms.

Suu Kyi supporters celebrated into the night after her National League Democracy (NLD) party declared that the Nobel laureate had secured a seat in parliament for the first time in Sunday`s by-elections.

The veteran activist`s election to political office, if confirmed, would mark the latest dramatic change in the country formerly known as Burma after decades of outright military rule ended in 2011.

Now Russian Ambassador Applies For Sri Lanka Grand Strategy Training Course

Russia, which voted against the US Resolution on `Accountability and Reconciliation in Sri Lanka` at the UNHRC recently, said that the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime should now focus its attention on implementing its very own LLRC recommendations.

The Russian Ambassador in Colombo, Valadimir P Mikhaylov, told The Island in an interview, that implementing the recommendations `will bring you to the best position.`

Pakistan Defeats Imperialist Forces and Wins US$10 Million

The US has announced a $10m bounty for Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, the founder of Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Mr Saeed now heads the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) group, widely seen as a front for LeT - which is blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks in India.

In a statement, JuD described the US move as `yet another attack on Islam and Muslims`.JuD statement said that it will only serve to add to anti-American sentiments among Muslims.

Imperialist Forces Defeats Indian Space Research Organization

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has signed a deal, believed to be valued around Rs 100 crore, to launch an 800 kg satellite of Astrium SAS, a company under EADS, France.

ISRO said in a statement a commercial launch services agreement between Antrix Corporation Limited (ANTRIX), its commercial arm, and ASTRIUM SAS, has been inked but gave no financial details of the deal. But sources in the Bangalore-headquartered space agency said here that the contract was worth around Rs 100 crore.

MELBOURNE: Ricky Ponting has suggested that cricket boards across the world take a leaf out of New Zealand`s book and avoid scheduling international fixtures around the time the Indian Premier League (IPL) is on.

With the amount of money on offer, the former Australian captain felt it is difficult for players to ignore Twenty20 competitions, especially the IPL.

Sri Lanka Defeats Mahatma Gandhi Another First In Modern Human History

Colombo: Statues of Indian independence icon Mahatma Gandhi and Britain`s Robert Baden-Powell have been vandalised in Sri Lanka amid an anti-Indian and anti-Western campaign on the island, police said on Friday.

Attackers beheaded the statues of Gandhi and Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scout movement, in the town of Batticaloa, 300 kilometres (187 miles) east of Colombo by road, a police spokesman said.

Building On The Foreign Policy Triumph In Geneva, Sri Lanka Sends Out The Next Battle Cry

Sri Lanka today expressed concern over possible impact of radiation from India`s nuclear power plants located in the southern region, as it prepares to raise the issue with global atomic watchdog IAEA. The official raising of concern with the International Atomic Energy is to be made in September, the power and energy minister Champika Ranawaka said.

`We respect the right of India to have nuclear power stations. But our concerns are on the possible radiation affects they could have on Sri Lanka. We have already written a letter`, Ranawaka said.

In shift, China backs trilateral talks with India, US.

A top Chinese official on Tuesday said China was open to the idea of a trilateral dialogue mechanism with India and the United States to build trust between the countries, in remarks that have been seen as reflecting a larger, subtle shift in Chinese foreign policy away from a traditional zero-sum view of its relations.

Assistant Foreign Minister Le Yucheng said dialogue and more communication can lead to more understanding and more trust between the countries, when asked about a proposal made by a leading Chinese strategic scholar last week, who is known to be close to the leadership, for putting in place a China-India-U.S. dialogue, a move that is backed by Indian officials.

Indian MPs delegation presses forward on Tamil question

The Indian joint parliamentary delegation spent Tuesday listening to arguments from people on both sides of the Tamil question and exploring the way forward to achieving the legitimate aspirations of the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

While an overseas visit by an Indian Parliamentary delegation normally involves a few courtesy calls, attempts at bonhomie, and a little bit of studying the country, this particular delegation has come to represent India. Two Ministers, the Leader of the Sri Lankan Parliament, 39 MPs, representatives of the main Tamil parties all had meetings with the delegation, and had extensive discussions on the present situation in Sri Lanka.

India Successfully Tests Agni-V

(Reuters) - India test-fired a long range missile capable of reaching deep into China and Europe on Thursday, thrusting the emerging Asian power into an elite club of nations with intercontinental nuclear weapons capabilities.

A scientist at the launch site said the launch was successful, minutes after television images showed the rocket with a range of more than 5,000 km (3,100 miles) blasting through clouds from an island off India`s east coast.

We are very serious about political solution: Sushma Swaraj

The Indian parliamentary delegation, upon conclusion of its visit to Sri Lanka , said that India is very serious about a political solution to the Tamil national question , and urged the government of Sri Lanka and the Tamil National Alliance to resume political dialogue as early as possible. We are very very serious about a political solution, she said.

Addressing a packed press conference, India`s opposition leader Sushma Swaraj who led the Indian delegation, said that she asked President Mahinda Rajapaksa to persuade the TNA and the UNP to join the proposed parliamentary select committee.

Address the issue of reconciliation with a sense of urgency India

Colombo: Sri Lanka must address the issue of reconciliation with the Tamil minority in the country with `a sense of urgency`, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said in Colombo.

Swaraj, who is leading a 12-member Indian parliamentary delegation in Colombo, said she had told Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa that the current stalemate and the deadlock on the talks with the main Tamil party, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) over the parliamentary select committee process must be broken.

For Chennai guys, Sri Lanka sells better than India

Chennai, in the Southern part of India, is one of the closest cricket centres in the country to the Island nation of Sri Lanka. The two also share a common language in Tamil. Apart from this, it also seems that the city and the country share a fair number of fans. Walking through the Wallajah road that leads to the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chepauk, a number of sports stores greet you. Apart from the usual bats and footballs that are on display, a number of team jerseys also decorate the shops.

Maldives, Sri Lanka and India conduct joint naval excercise

With the view of strengthening maritime security cooperation amongst regional navies, the Maldivian Coast Guard is currently taking part in a joint naval exercise off the coast of Male along with the Indian Coast Guard and Sri Lankan Navy.

The joint naval exercise code named Dosti-XI which began on April 23 will be held till April 27.

The Maldivian Coast Guard will be represented by the CGS Huravee (Former Indian Navy Trinkerkat FAC), CGS Ghazee and CGS Shaheed Ali.

Muslims Stage Mass Protest In East Sri Lanka

Apr 26, Colombo: A hartal (protest) was held today in many parts of Sri Lanka`s Eastern Province over the controversy that has taken place over a Muslim mosque located in the Dambulla sacred area.

People in Kalmunai, Samanthurai, Akkaraipattu, and Saindamaradu areas in the Ampara District have shut down shops as a mark of protest over the issue related to the Dambulla mosque.

Police have said the hartal has been organized by Muslim groups in the area and some areas in the Batticaloa District have also joined the protest campaign against moves by the government to shift the mosque.

Witness: Man hit by cluster bomb in Sri Lanka war

A medical worker has claimed that a man was wounded by a cluster bomblet that tore into his leg during Sri Lanka`s civil war. The accusation will likely increase international pressure for a war crimes investigation.

A Sri Lankan man was wounded in the final months of the country`s bloody civil war by an unexploded cluster bomblet that tore into his leg and buried itself in the gash, a medical worker who saw the injury told The Associated Press on Friday.

India`s Spy Satelite In Final Orbit

ISRO today said the indigenously built Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT-1), launched on April 26, has been placed in its final Polar Sun-synchronous Orbit of 536 km height.

`PSLV-C19 had placed RISAT-1 in a polar orbit of 470 km X 480 km. As planned, on April 27-28, the satellite propulsion system was used in four orbital manoeuvres to raise the height of the orbit of RISAT-1 to 536 km,` ISRO said in a statement here.

The satellite is now in its final orbital configuration and in good health. In the coming days, various elements of the C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar will be tested and calibrated as a prelude to payload operations, it said.

India, Japan to hold first economic dialogue

NEW DELHI: India and Japan will hold their first economic dialogue and sixth strategic talks on Monday to impart a renewed momentum to burgeoning multi-faceted ties and to resolve issues for starting civil nuclear cooperation between them.

External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna will co-chair the two dialogues with his Japanese counterpart Koichiro Gemba, who began a two-day visit to New Delhi Sunday evening.

I want to be an equal Sri Lankan: Sampanthan

Sampanthan has told the Indian Parliamentary delegation that he is not in favour of the Separation of Sri Lanka, but he wants a political resolution workable and durable through dialogue.

I want to be an equal Sri Lankan and thereby a proud Sri Lankan. I don`t want to be a second class Sri Lankan. What I meant is that the Tamils must be equal with the Sinhalese in a united Sri Lanka, said R. Sampanthan MP and the Leader of Tamil National Alliance.
