If a state can intimidate and threaten its citizens on foreign soil in Geneva, one can only imagine what it is capable of within its own sovereign borders.
Monday, 2 April 2012 - 11:20 PM SL Time

State sovereignty continues to be a shield throughout much of the world where there is a need to circumvent international law and human rights obligations. Sri Lanka is one such state and is a well-known violator of human rights. As a historic first, the United Nations Human Rights Council has taken a strong stance against the Sri Lankan state`s human rights record through a U.S.-initiated, Canada-sponsored resolution that questions the actions of the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam during the last phases of the civil war.

Self Made Millioner Thanks To Govt Policies For the Poor.
Tuesday, 3 April 2012 - 8:14 AM SL Time

Though the news headlines flashed the slaying of the former MP and Presidential Advisor Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra, there were other facets of the incident that showed involvement of criminal gangs.
Now what sort of place is Kolonnawa? In the past it was an electorate represented by leftists and left leaning politicians like T. B. Illangaratne, but later on the character of the suburb changed with criminal gangs holding sway in almost all sectors.
The support of certain politicians for illicit hooch brewers, drug barons and prostitution promoters as well as strong arm interference even in civil transactions like land sales were the highlights of the recent development of organized crime here.

The Tamil struggle in Sri Lanka for an independent and sovereign state has two dimensions. One is to create conditions for international recognition and full realization of the Tamils` right to self-determination and the other to bring to light what happened in the final stages of the war in 2009.
What happened then was nothing but an act of genocide. We want to ensure accountability and justice for the victims. We also hope that the international community will recognize that what happened in Sri Lanka was an act of genocide. This in turn will justify and lend support for our demand that only an independent state will ensure Tamils` physical survival in our traditional homeland.

UNP Matara District MP Mangala Samaraweera yesterday recalled how the then Opposition MP Mahinda Rajapaksa had internationalized domestic issues by taking up human rights at the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) in Geneva during the 1987-1990 period. Samaraweera, who worked closely with Rajapaksa at that time, told parliament that it was Rajapaksa who had first raised human rights violations on behalf of the then political Opposition.

As a nation, we are ruled by a group of men who seem to have nothing but contempt for the rule of law, let alone for truth in the public sphere.

If Sri Lanka is fast becoming a pariah state in the eyes of the world, it has nothing to do with the recent UNHRC Resolution.
The writing has long been on the wall. As a nation, we are ruled by a group of men who seem to have nothing but contempt for the rule of law, let alone for truth in the public sphere. Violence and threats of violence against critics, the suppression of media freedom, extra-judicial killings, misplaced economic priorities and corruption on a scale that made even previous governments look clean, have become the order of the day.

In one of the most shameful episodes ever to be revealed the Sri Lankan government`s involvement in the `abduction industry` was exposed last night (April 9) when the government took action to deport Premakumar Gunarathnam alias Ratnayake Mudiyanselage Dayalal who was abducted on April 6, 2012. This abduction brought immediately reactions from the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP), human rights organisations and the Australian government. The Secretary of the Ministry of Defense, Gotabaya Rajapakse initially declared that he was unaware of any such abduction. The Director General of the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS), Lakshman Hulugalle, previous stated to the BBC that there was no reason for the government to arrest Mr. Gunarathnam and Ms. Dimuthu Attigala. Then, even shortly before the deportation Gotabaya Rajapakse told the media that Mr. Gunarathnam would be charged in many cases.

The Australian man abducted in Sri Lanka over the weekend has contradicted the claims of the Colombo government, claiming it abducted him, and were it not for Canberra`s intervention he would have faced certain death.

But, we were taken by surprise to see some well built young men participating in very strange events in the MBICH grounds, normally occupied by civilians, as the BMICH is a civilian organization since it was constructed in 1972. But the BMICH and the entire ground is now turn into a Military Camp as it houses the headquarters of the Rakna Aracksha Lanka Ltd. (also know as RALL) - the most powerful security company in Sri Lanka owned by Gotabaya Rajapaksa the Secretary of Defence. Private Security companies are plenty in Sri Lanka each company is not much different to any other, providing unarmed security to government and private establishments and private properties. Among them, Avant Guard started by ex-Commando Major Nissanka Senadhipathy became more dominant, solely due to the business acumen of key individuals. However, even Avant Guard is no match RALL looks far ahead, powerful and sadly, aloof from all other companies.

It is with great concern that we the undersigned protest against the growing trend of increasing religious intolerance in Sri Lanka with regard to minority religions.
We specifically condemn the recent violent attack on the Mosque in Dambulla by a group of anti social actors. The Hindu community has also been asked to move their temple from the vicinity.
The Dambulla Khairya Jummah Mosque had been in existence for over 60 years[1]and the mosque trustees have legal documents regarding its construction. On Friday the 20th of April 2012 a tense situation arose as regular Friday prayer at the Mosque was prevented by a gang led by Buddhist monks who claimed that it was an illegal construction. The group stated that both the Mosque and Hindu shrine were built on sacred Buddhist ground. It is further regrettable that law enforcement authorities could not take appropriate action to stop the forceful entry into the mosque and the intimidation of the community

Yet, within many Tamils there exists a widespread belief that the Sri Lankan government is trying to wipe out their Tamil culture and religious identity by constructing Buddhist temples in Tamil areas. Now many of another ethnic minority feel recent moves have taken another dimension.
