Friday, 2 March 2012 - 9:44 PM SL Time

2.05 pm `Indians can go home and take some rest as SL is going to win this match. Generally whoever bats first in MCG and scores above 220, they are going to be winners,` says Kenche. `Mahela chose two spinners and they will be handy to take 10 Aus wickets as the ball doesn`t come on to the bat especially under lights.`

Arjun: `Rare moment for Australia: They will experience what it feels like to have a billion more fans!`

Human Rights Hypocrisy
Sunday, 4 March 2012 - 8:38 AM SL Time

My friends in the UK are asking me what is happening to Sri Lanka as they read about the Commons debate and the shenanigans in Geneva. This is what I told them.

On February 22 2012, the House of Commons witnessed one of its periodic orgies of self-righteousness. The Pecksniffery was ecumenical opposition MPs eagerly lined up to offer their unsolicited support for the government line. The issue that united so many diverse humbugs was the human rights record of the Sri Lankan government. The debate was about whether an independent, international commission of inquiry should be established to investigate allegations of war crimes perpetrated at the conclusion of Sri Lanka`s armed conflict in 2009.

Washington (CNN) -- Eight current and former U.S. service members filed a lawsuit Tuesday alleging they were raped, sexually assaulted or harassed while serving in the military and were retaliated against once they reported the abuse.

Among the defendants named in the suit are current and former Defense and Navy secretaries and Marine Corps commandants.

`Although defendants testified before Congress and elsewhere that they have `zero tolerance` for rape and sexual assault, their conduct and the facts demonstrate the opposite: They have a high tolerance for sexual predators in their ranks, and `zero tolerance` for those who report rape, sexual assault and harassment,` according to the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court in Washington.

Panna Cotta

Eight servings

Adapted from Secrets From My Tuscan Kitchen by Judy Witts

I love this dessert and the great thing about Panna Cotta is that it demands to be made in advance. You can make them up to two days ahead and keep them well-covered and chilled.

For gelatin-related questions, read my Tips for Using Gelatin. You can find instructions for using sheet gelatin at the end of the recipe.

4 cups (1l) heavy cream (or half-and-half)
1/2 cup (100g) sugar
2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, or 1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise

LANKAN PROFESSOR S VISIT SPARKS STIR IN TIRUCHY
Tuesday, 13 March 2012 - 5:47 PM SL Time

Even while the issue of visits by Sri Lankans, especially Sinhalese, to Tamil Nadu had become a contentious issue between the State and Centre, a college in Tiruchy invited a Sri Lankan professor, triggering protests from Dalit outfits and Tamil nationalist groups.

Close on the heels of a protest against the visit of a Lankan professor for a function at the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, the participation of another Sri Lankan professor at a conference in Tiruchy evoked vociferous protests. However, before the protestors could arrive at the Bishop Heber College, the venue of the conference, Prof Hemamalie Gunatilake, completed his speech and was sent safely.

US Defence Secretary: Afghan shooting rampage not unusual in war
Saturday, 17 March 2012 - 9:31 AM SL Time

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta says that the shooting spree in which a US soldier killed 16 men, women and children isn`t the first and it probably won`t be the last such incident.

Mr Panetta said the soldier may face capital charges, but that the US must resist pressure from Washington and Kabul to change course in Afghanistan because of anti-American outrage over the shooting.
`We seem to get tested almost every other day with challenges that test our leadership and our commitment to the mission that we`re involved in,` Mr Panetta told reporters travelling with him on Monday to Kyrgyzstan.

U.S. officials said they gained a key ally in their effort to push Sri Lanka to allow an independent investigation of government atrocities carried out at the climax of the country`s 26-year civil war against the Tamil Tigers in 2009.

Eileen Donahoe, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, said the council this week is set to accept a U.S. resolution to that affect during a meeting in Geneva that ends Friday, despite Sri Lanka`s attempt to block it.

The US announced that it has eased restrictions on defense sales to Sri Lanka to allow exports of equipment for aerial and maritime surveillance, media reports said.

The State Department enacted the changes with effect from Thursday. The new exceptions allow exports, on a case-by-case basis, of equipment such as, light aircraft, cameras, and related components.

The UN`s top human rights body on Thursday has passed a US sponsored resolution calling on Sri Lanka to properly investigate alleged war crimes during its 26-year conflict with the Tamil Tigers.

My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Friday, 23 March 2012 - 2:04 PM SL Time

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.

Hans Zimmer, our time`s Handel, Bach, Beethoven all rolled in to one
Friday, 30 March 2012 - 1:35 PM SL Time

The last 25 years, if you watched a movie that had a memorable, kickass soundtrack, chances are Hans Zimmer played a key role.
For those who wants to really listen to some masterpices, watch the movies Thin Red Line, True Romance, Last Samurai, Inception, Pirates of the Caribbean, Black Hawk Down, Gladiator.... basically all of the biggest movies in the last 30 years or so.
My favorite of his works are where he corroborated with an Australian singer called Lisa Gerrard. She is the haunting voice in the tracks in Black Hawk Down, Gladiator and Man on Fire.
