SL Navy backs Indian poachers clashing with fishermen in Jaffna

Sri Lanka Navy Monday night engaged in giving protection to Indian trawlers that were destroying the fishing nets of local fishermen, according to S. Thavaratnam, the president of fisheries societies in Jaffna. The SLN has detained 33 fishermen from Munai in Point Pedro with their 12 boats alleging them for attacking the Indian fishermen, Mr. Thavaratnam told reporters. In the meantime, sources in Kaarai Nakar and in Point Pedro said Indian trawlers came close to the shores of Jaffna peninsula at many locations destroying the fishing nets put up by the local fishermen.

Major General Shavendra Silva - Deputy Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations has been selected to the Special Advisory Group on Peace Keeping Operations established by the UN Secretary General to advise on rates of reimbursement to troop-contributing countries and related issues.
This is the first time that a Sri Lankan has been appointed to such a prestigious post relating to peace keeping operations, throughout Sri Lanka`s 50-year long partnership with the Department of Peacekeeping.

Uva Provincial Council Member Senthil Thondaman, the nephew of Minister Arumugam Thondaman, has reportedly been harassed by a group of political activists while visiting a temple in Tamil Nadu.
Sports and Youth Affairs Minister of the Uva Province, Senthil Thondaman, was taking part in religious activities at Thirunallar Temple in Pondicherry last night and was surrounded by a group, consisting of around 20 Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi activists, when he had stepped out of the Kovil.
The group had demonstrated waving black flags, shouting slogans against the Sri Lankan government and the President, which resulted in a tense situation in the vicinity of the temple, Indian media reported.
