Krishna to take stock of IDP housing project

After a series of delays at various levels, false-starts, slip-shod trial and error experimentation at the Indian and Sri Lankan capitals, the massive Indian housing project for the displaced Tamils is set to take off.
External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna, and his team that deals directly with the project, including the Joint Secretary (BSM) Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Adviser Raghavendra Shastry, will review the project on the ground, once they arrive here on January 16. They will be assisted by the team headed by High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Ashok K.Kantha, who worked on redrawing the implementation of the project. Apart from the political settlement issue, the housing project will be the major item of his [Mr. Krishna`s] agenda, one official said.

The great Russian author and playwright Anton Chekhov never visited India but he managed to spend 3 days on an island often described as the teardrop of India, that is Sri Lanka. While the author`s brief stay in Sri Lanka gave him a lot of happiness, little did he know that the island-nation would continue to celebrate his work and legacy with zeal.

India dominates Man Asian book prize shortlist

HONG KONG: Indian writers dominate the shortlist of authors competing for Asia`s top English-language literary prize, with a debut Pakistani novelist also among those vying for the $30,000 award.
An unprecedented seven authors, including three from India and writers from Pakistan, South Korea, Japan and China, will compete for the 2011 Man Asian Literary Prize after judges expanded the shortlist from its usual five.

The Men Who Killed Gandhi

In this day, in 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was murdered by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu extremist, who shot Mahatma thrice as he entered a prayer meeting.
Ironically, Nathuram Godse imagined himself as the true patriot, self appointed protector of Hindus and a selfless man championing a higher cause, which led him to assassinate Mahatma.
He continues as one of the most spectacular demonstration of Nietzsche`s following observation:
`Convictions are more dangerous enemies of truth than lies.`

Dassault Rafale wins India`s fighter deal beating Eurofighter Typhoon

NEW DELHI: French company Dassault Rafale today bagged India`s biggest-ever contract for supplying 126 combat aircraft for the air force, edging out European competitor EADS in the multi-billion dollar deal.
The French firm was declared as the lowest bidder, according to which it will get the contract under India`s defence procurement procedure, sources said.
`The French firm Dassault Rafale has emerged as the L-1 (lowest bidder) and cheaper than its european rival EADS (maker of Eurofighter) in the tender and will be offered to supply the aircraft to the IAF,` the source said.
