By Matthew Russell Lee
UNITED NATIONS, September 2 -- After the bloody final stage of conflict in Sri Lanka in 2009, alongside stalled action at the UN and its Human Rights Council, a documentary was made. This `Killing Fields` film about Sri Lanka has still apparenlty not been seen by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Nor was it ever screened inside the UN, but rather across First Avenue in what`s called the Church Center.

Genocide in Sri Lanka targets Tamil women, affects fertility: TNA MP
[TamilNet, Monday, 05 September 2011, 06:17 GMT]
While talking on the past and on-going genocide of Eezham Tamils in the island of Sri Lanka, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian for Vanni, S. Sritharan on Sunday said in a meeting in London that Tamil women are particularly targeted now and the fertility of Tamils is systematically jeopardized. He cited the examples of `grease devil` attacks on women and the plight of young widows in child-producing age group. Eezham Tamils are increasingly convinced today that a united Sri Lanka would not work, he said. Later, when a question was asked why the TNA had not raised the issues of genocide and right to self-determination in the recent meet convened by a Congress MP at New Delhi, the deputy leader of TNA Maavai Senadhiraja answered that their unawareness of the agenda of the organizers and the desire not to exhibit disunity among the invited groups had been the reasons

Friends, Enemies and Geopolitics
[TamilNet, Wednesday, 07 September 2011, 08:27 GMT]
National oppression is common to all countries and we cannot expect the dominant Nations of Countries to be our friends. Our strategic long-term natural allies are obviously the oppressed Nations without State and then the oppressed peoples of the World. We have failed to cultivate friendship and solidarity with our Natural Allies while foolishly expecting the oppressors to deliver Liberation to us. We need to give highest priority first for unity among ourselves at least to the level of coordinating action committees for specific objectives and then develop solidarity and friendship with the Nation without State of Tamil Nadu followed by relationship with other Natural Allies, writes TamilNet Economic and Geopolitical Analyst in the Asia Pacific.

Using grease devils Colombo sets next stage of militarisation
Friday, 9 September 2011 - 2:57 AM SL Time
|
Citing `grease devils,` Sri Lanka occupying the country of Eezham Tamils sets the next stage of its militarisation by creating a `civil` paramilitary that will be formally led by SL minister Mr Douglas Devananda, but actually `steered` by the commander of the occupying forces, Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe and the colonial governor Maj. Gen. Chandrasri. Openly accusing SL government and SL military for staging `grease devil` attacks on Tamils and Muslims, the demonstrating Jaffna University students on Tuesday called upon the attention of the International Community. But the kind of International Community we see sitting on the world today will only be happy to receive more military lessons from Gotabhaya and `Asian Nobel` laureate Hathurusinghe on how to use devil strategy for militarisation, commented a civil rights activist in Jaffna.

UN inaction responsible for `grease devil` phenomenon, NZ Tamils tell Ban
[TamilNet, Saturday, 10 September 2011, 00:16 GMT]
In a letter routed through the Mayor of Auckland to UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon visiting New Zealand, the Tamil Action Front in New Zealand on Monday urged the UNSG to stop the post-war disaster the Eezham Tamils have been going through. [The UN panel] report was released in April 2011. It is September now. There is no indication that you have done justice to the report not even sent a copy to the UN Human Rights Council for discussion and action. Your inaction has emboldened Sri Lanka to order the Security Forces to menacingly intrude into homes of the peace loving Tamil and Muslim peoples of the traditional Tamil speaking areas the North and East of Sri Lanka, the Front said in its letter.

NASA s Kepler confirms first planet orbiting two stars
Friday, 16 September 2011 - 10:21 PM SL Time
|
WASHINGTON -- The existence of a world with a double sunset, as portrayed in the film Star Wars more than 30 years ago, is now scientific fact. NASA`s Kepler mission has made the first unambiguous detection of a circumbinary planet -- a planet orbiting two stars -- 200 light-years from Earth.
Unlike Star Wars` Tatooine, the planet is cold, gaseous and not thought to harbor life, but its discovery demonstrates the diversity of planets in our galaxy. Previous research has hinted at the existence of circumbinary planets, but clear confirmation proved elusive. Kepler detected such a planet, known as Kepler-16b, by observing transits, where the brightness of a parent star dims from the planet crossing in front of it.

Sri Lanka cancels landing visa for 78 countries
[TamilNet, Monday, 19 September 2011, 12:25 GMT]
Based on `security considerations` Sri Lanka cancels landing visa facility to 78 countries. Visitors form these countries could make online applications from September 28 onwards for Colombo to process visas, Daily Mirror reported Monday, citing a SL Immigration Department official. The 78 countries are yet to be named and getting online visa prior to arrival will be mandatory from 01 January 2012. Through the process genocidal Colombo aims to differentiate, screen and deny visa to diaspora Eezham Tamils having foreign passports, said diaspora political circles adding that this is another intimidation tactic. As property rights and even visiting rights of Eezham Tamils are targeted in subtle ways, only jokers can deny that there is no structural genocide in the island, diaspora circles further said.

Discussions in Geneva show world plunging into `State Anarchy`
[TamilNet, Thursday, 22 September 2011, 05:26 GMT]
The way Sri Lanka`s war crimes were viewed by many State actors at Geneva showed how these States are leading the world into anarchy and are contributing to global unrest of peoples, political observers said. In an informal discussion of State delegates and human rights groups held in Geneva on Wednesday on a draft proposal from Canada to convene an Interactive Discussion on the outcome of Sri Lanka`s LLRC in the 19th session in March 2011, Sri Lanka challenged such a procedure. Russia, China, Cuba and Pakistan opposed any demand on Sri Lanka. Malaysia and Algeria were not happy of the procedure. Thailand, Chili and Mexico were sitting on the fence. The EU, UK, USA, Poland, Denmark, Switzerland and New Zealand welcomed the proposal. India and Maldives present in the room were silent.

At the Right of Replies of the 26th Plenary Meeting of the UNHR Council, Ambassador Tamara Kunanayakam made a statement in reply to the credibility and independence of the LLRC report and also commented on the transmission of the Ban Ki-moon`s report on Sri Lanka to the UNHRC.
The Ambassador condemned the apriori judgment made on the domestic mechanisms used by the government to resolve the issue of reconciliation. Furthermore she stated that the report forwarded by Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to the UNHRC was contrary to established codes of the council`s constitution, which made it all the more inappropriate, irregular and procedurally improper .

Canada speaks out against inaction on Sri Lanka.- and the response to it by Canadian Tamil `Circles`

The following were comments from diaspora political circles in Canada:
The draft resolution placed by the Canadian delegation for an informal discussion among other delegates and human rights groups at Geneva last weekThe Canadian delegation came out with a fundamentally wanting resolution at the informal discussions at Geneva.
The Canadian resolution was not at all touching on the UN panel report that had recommended an international investigation of the war crimes in the island. Instead the resolution wanted a review in the March Sessions of the Human Rights Council, on the LLRC findings that were expected from Sri Lanka in November.

Regimes in Sri Lanka, Maldives, forge questionable alliance
[TamilNet, Wednesday, 28 September 2011, 06:09 GMT]
Maldivian Vice-President Dr Mohammed Waheed, meeting Mahinda Rajapaksa over the weekend at the UN General Assembly Sessions, assured the latter of the support of Male to Colombo`s stand on its human rights issues, according to Maldivian media Haveeru, Tuesday. Early this month Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed defended Sri Lanka`s position at the UN Human Rights Council sessions held in Geneva, Haveeru said in its feature Maldives assures support for Sri Lanka amidst UN allegations. The undue extra efforts taken by the present regime in Male to shield Colombo against the struggle of Tamils and Muslims in the island need careful scrutiny by the people in Maldives and peoples movements across South Asia, commented a political observer in Male.
