`RAJIV GANDHI KILLING WAS WRONG, BUT MY DAD IS INNOCENT
Saturday, 3 September 2011 - 2:52 PM SL Time

Harithra Murugan is happy her father Murugan`s execution for plotting former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi`s assassination has been stayed for eight weeks by Madras high court. But she believes her father is innocent. India is a great country. It should not allow the hanging of an innocent man, she told TOI.

Sri Lankan Tamils Murugan and Santhan along with Perarivalan, an Indian Tamil, were sentenced to death for plotting the 1991 assassination. On August 11, President Pratibha Patil rejected the mercy petitions of the three men linked to LTTE. The date of hanging was fixed for September 9. But, the Tamil Nadu assembly adopted a resolution requesting President Patil to reconsider their mercy pleas. I am very happy. I would like to thank everyone who fought for them (her father, Santhan and Perarivalan), 19-year-old Harithra told the BBC Tamil service.

COIMBATORE: A US diplomat of Indian origin who had a stint at the American consulate in Chennai had in a confidential cable hinted that the LTTE could have financially supported the MDMK leader Vaiko, according to Wikileaks.

In a cable sent on May 15, 2006, two days after the DMK was voted to power, Ravi Candadai, the then acting US Consul General in India, while ruling out funding for the LTTE from Tamil Nadu, said: It may be, however, that some financial support flows the other way, that is, from the LTTE to certain political leaders in Tamil Nadu, notably Vaiko, founder and general secretary of the MDMK.

FIVE LANKANS GO ON TRIAL IN THE HAGUE FOR SUPPORTING LTTE, looks like the curse they placed on Mervyn backfired on these hapless Tamils.
Wednesday, 14 September 2011 - 5:07 PM SL Time

Five Sri Lankan men go on trial tomorrow in The Hague accused of supporting the separatist Tamil Tigers, or LTTE. The indictees are accused of being members of a criminal organisation with terrorist intentions and of raising funds for it.

A Dutch police-investigation team monitored Tamil meetings in The Netherlands. In its subsequent report, entitled `Operation Koninck`, it describes how certain Tamils raised funds for their `ultimate war` with its goal of a free Tamil state in Sri Lanka known as Tamil Eelam. This remains no more than a dream following the death of the LTTE`s leader Villupilai Prabhakaran [sic] and the end of the military struggle in the Spring of 2009. Operation Koninck eventually led to the arrest of several Dutch Tamils, five of whom are now being prosecuted in a specialist war crimes chamber in The Hague.

How to Make the Perfect Steak

The goal -- the perfect steak -- is defined by the contrast between the charred exterior and the warm, juicy center. Walzog`s detailed instructions follow.

Cooking the steaks:
4 prime New York strip steaks (11/2 inches thick, about 14 to 16 ounces each the thickness is more important than the weight)
2 sticks unsalted butter
1/2 cup corn oil
8 teaspoons kosher salt
8 teaspoons cracked black pepper

Melt the butter over medium-high heat and skim the milk solids from the surface. Set aside to cool.

Lawless America: 20 Examples Of Desperate People Doing Desperate Things
Monday, 19 September 2011 - 7:18 PM SL Time

All over America today, desperate people are doing desperate things. As the economy continues to crumble, the American people are starting to become very frustrated. Millions have lost their homes and millions have lost their jobs. As hopelessness and despair rise, an increasing number of Americans are turning to crime or are lashing out in unpredictable ways. Many parts of America are rapidly turning into lawless hellholes. In some of the areas that have been the hardest hit by the declining economy, police forces are being severely cut back and desperate criminals are being given a lot of freedom to roam. In fact, in some major cities (such as Oakland, California), the police have announced that there are certain types of crime that they will not even respond to any more. For a couple of decades, crime had been steadily declining in the United States, but now we are seeing very disturbing reports from all over the nation of desperate people doing desperate things as they scramble to survive or as they vent their frustrations. If the examples that you are about to read are any indication, then America is headed down a very dark path.

Northern youth enjoy southern hospitality
Monday, 19 September 2011 - 9:31 PM SL Time

Edith Wharton once said, `there are only two ways of spreading light - to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it`. In that enlightened spirit of cultural give and take, the International Centre for Ethnic studies (ICES) conducted a program from August 18-21 called Exposure Visit. This allowed Tamil youth from Manthai West in Mannar and Nedunkerni in Vavniya to meet some Sinhalese villagers for the first time in their lives.

The aim of the program was to expose these youth to the Sinhalese culture and life to create mutual cultural understanding. The programme allowed for 50 youth from these provinces to spend a three days living in Boyawalana, a village in close proximity to Giriulla in the Kurunagala district.

Warp Speed just might be possible - Scientists: Particles appear to travel faster than light
Friday, 23 September 2011 - 6:31 PM SL Time

(CNN) -- Scientists in Switzerland say an experiment appears to show that tiny particles traveled faster than the speed of light -- a result that would seem to defy the laws of nature.
The physicists say that neutrinos sent 730 kilometers (453.6 miles) underground between laboratories in Switzerland and Italy arrived a fraction of a second sooner than they should have, according to the speed of light.
The report was published Friday by a group of researchers working on the so-called Opera experiment, based at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland.

Batti political family scion beckons Tamils away from politics of hate
Monday, 26 September 2011 - 3:48 PM SL Time

Q: You have grand ideas, but you are yet relatively unknown here as a businessman and politician so can you tell us something about your self and your background.

I come from a famous political family in Batticaloa. My father was Sam Tambimuttu, a member of parliament. He was assassinated by the LTTE along with my mothers_day.jsp' class=black>mother in 1990. They were gunned down in front of the Canadian High Commission at Gregory`s Road. My mother passed away ten days after the shooting. At the time I was about 14 years of age. After the assassination of my parents I went to UK and did my secondary and higher education there. I obtained a degree in economics from the University of Durham. Then I got involved in investment fund management and I lived away for 20 years. I returned to Sri Lanka three times after the assassination of my parents - all three times to renew my passport. I still hold a Sri Lankan passport. I never took a foreign citizenship. I never thought the day would arrive when I would come back to Sri Lanka and specifically to Batticaloa where we are hailing from. When I came back it struck me, it struck me a lot because I travelled the length and breadth of Eastern Province and Sri Lanka as a whole. I always knew our country is very beautiful and resourceful, but if you look at the past 60 years, since independence I feel we failed. We failed in many areas, but primarily our resources and what we have been given in this blessed island, but we have not achieved our full potential. So I had to ask questions, especially about Batticaloa, because I feel Batticaloa is immensely resource rich, but nothing has moved. People have not exploited the natural resources of the region. People are still quite poor with lot of unemployment. So I began to ask questions because my family members were part of the political process there. My mother`s father, Senator Manickckam was one of the founding leaders of the Federal Party along with H.A.V. Chelvanayakam. My father of course was a representative of TULF and my mother was an activist from the late 60s. My great granduncle was also a State Council member. He was more a Ceylonese nationalist and not a Tamil nationalist.

LTTE WAR MACHINE RUNS IN THE NETHERLANDS - PROSECUTION
Friday, 30 September 2011 - 6:49 PM SL Time

The Tamil community in the Netherlands (between 9,000 and 13,000 men) has been largely annexed by the Tamil Tigers to the violent conflict in Sri Lanka. Through extortion and sedition, a climate of fear has been shaped among Dutch Tamils.

This was the argument of Public Prosecutors (OM) Ward Ferdinandusse and Maartje Nieuwenhuis yesterday to The Hague court in a trial against five Tamils living in the Netherlands who were arrested in 2010.

According to the prosecutors, the suspects have been operating a base in the Netherlands for Sri Lanka`s Tamil Tigers (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, LTTE). The prosecution showed the defendants have overseen an international criminal and terrorist organisation involved in arson, bombings, murder, manslaughter and aggravated assault.
