God Bless America:)))) Gothabaya & Fonseke to Celebrate American Independence Day:)))))
Monday, 4 July 2011 - 12:31 PM SL Time

Happy Independence Day! Today marks the 235th anniversary of the day in 1776 on which the United States of America collectively and formally declared their independence from the British crown, which we commemorate with fireworks, parades, and all manner of patriotic displays. To some extent, our selection of July 4 as the date to celebrate is fairly arbitrary Richard Henry Lee`s resolution proclaiming the Colonies` separation from England was adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 2, the day John Adams initially believed would be honored by later generations of Americans, and the document declaring American independence, while dated two days later, was not signed for almost another month thereafter. In any case, declaring independence was largely a symbolic act independence was not actually achieved at least until the battle of Yorktown in 1781, or, arguably, until the Treaty of Paris was signed by John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, and the representative of the British crown on September 3, 1783. That treaty, which acknowledged the former Colonies as sovereign, free, and independent States, was ratified by the United States in January 1784, and by the British the following April. Take your pick regarding the proper date to celebrate, but there are any number of anniversaries with a better claim to being the birthday of our country than the Fourth of July.

Men with Broad Faces are BIG FAT LIARS - Revealed *wink*wink*wink* or *Tring*Tring*Tring*
Wednesday, 6 July 2011 - 4:17 PM SL Time

Men with wide faces are more likely to lie and cheat than narrow-faced men but they seem to make better businessmen, according to a study that links facial features with a tendency to engage in unethical behaviour.

Scientists believe they have evidence to show that the width of a man`s face relative to his facial height is an indicator of how powerful he feels and of his willingness to surreptitiously break social rules to achieve his goals.

The findings suggest that the width-to-height ratio of the face could be an ancient evolutionary signal of a man`s aggressiveness when dealing with competitors, said Professor Michael Haselhuhn of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, who led the study.

Has Maran got a Fat Face?
Wednesday, 6 July 2011 - 9:50 PM SL Time

New Delhi: Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran will find it harder to hold on to his place in the Cabinet. The CBI has today said in court that a preliminary inquiry suggests that Mr Maran did misuse his office in 2006 to force the sale of Aircel to an industrialist close to the Maran family.

The Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi met in Delhi this evening. Sources say that while they may have discussed the impending Cabinet reshuffle, they have not yet decided whether to drop Mr Maran. Their priority, government sources say, is to manage the political crisis that has emerged in Andhra Pradesh as a result of bulk resignations by politicians who want a new state of Telangana to be sanctioned.

And he added: `He can have sex six times a week, without overdoing it. And on the seventh day he should rest.

MBAs Vs Engineers - Who do we need? The West and East are all producing a lot of MBAs a lot more than the Engineers?
Sunday, 10 July 2011 - 2:50 PM SL Time

Bob Lutz, the former Vice Chairman of General Motors, is the most famous also-ran in the auto business. In the course of his 47-year rampage through the industry, he`s been within swiping range of the brass ring at Ford, BMW, Chrysler and, most recently, GM, but he`s never landed the top gig. It`s because he `made the cars too well,` he says. It might also have something to do with the fact that Maximum Bob, who could double as a character on Mad Men, is less an minence grise than a pithy self-promoter who has a tendency to go off corporate message. That said, his new book, Car Guys vs. Bean Counters: The Battle for the Soul of American Business, has a message worth hearing. To get the U.S. economy growing again, Lutz says, we need to fire the M.B.A.s and let engineers run the show.

Do you want to Become Rich like Bankers? Become a Farmer - Food Shortage High Prices for Food will make the Farmers the New Bankers:))))
Sunday, 10 July 2011 - 7:20 PM SL Time

If you want to become rich, Jim Rogers, investment whiz, best-selling author and one of Wall Street`s towering personalities, has this advice: Become a farmer. Food prices have been high recently. Some have questioned how long that can continue. Not Rogers. He predicts that farming incomes will rise dramatically in the next few decades, faster than those in most other industries even Wall Street. The essence of his argument is this: We don`t need more bankers. What we need are more farmers. The invisible hand will do its magic. `The world has got a serious food problem,` says Rogers. `The only real way to solve it is to draw more people back to agriculture.`

ADOLF Hitler ordered blow-up dolls for his troops because so many caught sex diseases from hookers, records reveal.

Nazi scientists developed the `synthetic comforters` for German soldiers who were enjoying themselves a bit too much in Paris.

The problem was so bad it was keeping many of the troops from their frontline duties. The World War Two project began in 1940 after SS chief Heinrich Himmler wrote: `The greatest danger in Paris is the widespread and uncontrolled presence of whores, picking up clients in bars, dance halls and other places.

W Karzi half Brother of President Karzai Warlord of Kandhahar shot dead by Taliban - US Plans in Afganistan in trouble?
Wednesday, 13 July 2011 - 12:45 AM SL Time

A huge power vacuum has opened in southern Afghanistan with the assassination on July 12 of Ahmed Wali Karzai, a half brother of President Hamid Karzai and, fundamentally, the godfather of Kandahar. U.S. officials are debating whether he will be followed by a more benign tribal autocrat or someone alleged to be just as bad and how much influence the Taliban will have over whoever fills his shoes.

Quick answer: there will be blood.

The assassination couldn`t come at a worse time for the U.S. military, which is wrapping up more than a year`s worth of intense fighting in the region. While the gains are routinely described as `fragile,` Washington was counting on a steady hand from the Karzai clan in both Kabul and Kandahar to cement them into place. That effort may have been mortally wounded along with Wali Karzai on Tuesday. Or if you buy into the notion that Wali Karzai was a corrupt warlord whose presence reduced the chance for progress in southern Afghanistan his death could turn out to be a bloody blessing. No one knows yet.

Can `Fair & Loved` Manager perform as well as `Rude & Hated` Manager?
Thursday, 14 July 2011 - 11:26 PM SL Time

In management, fairness is a virtue. Numerous academic studies have shown that the most effective leaders are generally those who give employees a voice, treat them with dignity and consistency, and base decisions on accurate and complete information.

But there`s a hidden cost to this behavior. We`ve found that although fair managers earn respect, they`re seen as less powerful than other managers less in control of resources, less able to reward and punish and that may hurt their odds of attaining certain key, contentious leadership roles.

Harvard was still most popular among the 5,000 employers polled worldwide, but Cambridge was voted best for research quality in a survey of 15,000 academics and took overall first place. The rankings also use citation counts from a database of academic publishing.

most fascinating and peculiar gene within our genome posing vast implications for our understanding of lifeand evolution - Siva Nagarajah
Sunday, 17 July 2011 - 12:59 PM SL Time

PRDM9: the word alone maynot strike asnoteworthy, but don`t let the alphanumeric code deceive you. It might just prove to be one of the most fascinating and peculiar gene within our genome posing vast implications for our understanding of lifeand evolution.

Students have for years memorised, recounted, and rewritten of random recombination, or shuffling of genes within sex cells a process vital to producing the variation we see in organisms today. However when Professor Gilean McVean`s team at the Wellcome Trust centre for Human Genetics sequenced at which points along a chromosome such shuffling occurs, the results were surprising. Speaking at the Royal Society he stated until recently we knew very little where it happened . and why it happened but it now appears most recombination is clustered in to 5-10 %of genome in short windows of about 1000 bases .Such reordering within hotspots on chromosomes is neither random nor even. So what causes it?

Kerala CM installs Webcam to his office so that public can see the going ons 24 hrs a Day? I think this should be the case for all public servants

Thiruvananthapuram: That is the premise for the webcam that a top government official here has installed in his office, as an anticorruption experiment. Goings-on in his chamber are viewable to the public, 24/7.

In an India beset by kickback scandals at the highest reaches of government, and where petty bribes at police stations and motor vehicle departments are often considered a matter of course, Oommen Chandy is making an online stand.

`Instead of taking action against corruption, I believe that we have to create an atmosphere where everything should be in a transparent way,` Mr. Chandy, who recently became chief minister of Kerala state after his coalition won a close election, said in an interview in his office. `The people must know everything.`

Mordoch on the `Doch` British MPs to grill the Father Son & The Holy Ghost today about Dirty Tactics employed at the International Organisation Newscorp
Tuesday, 19 July 2011 - 5:14 PM SL Time

Questions were being raised in the US over Rupert Murdoch`s position at the head of the embattled News Corporation as the media mogul prepared to appear before MPs investigating the phone-hacking scandal in London.

The Bloomberg business and financial news website reported that independent directors had been weighing up the possibility of replacing Murdoch as chief executive although he would remain as chairman.

A leading independent board member denied this, but speculation that 80-year-old Murdoch`s future could depend in part on his performance when questioned along with his son James and Rebekah Brooks by the Commons culture, media and sport select committee, typified the febrile atmosphere as the crisis over relations between politicians, police and the press entered its third week.

Friday, 22 July 2011 - 3:21 PM SL Time

The word `famine` may be a familiar one, but it is not thrown around lightly by the people who decide when there is one. The fact that most of us today probably associate the term with the 1984 crisis in Ethiopia is testament to its exceedingly careful dispensation to use it too often would dilute its power to command the attention of the press and governments around the world. Famines don`t happen overnight, but when the United Nations declares one, those governments are expected to pay attention and help pay to get the situation under control.

Adults have No Excuse not to learn another Language
Saturday, 23 July 2011 - 8:18 AM SL Time

IT`S never too late to learn another language. Surprisingly, under controlled conditions adults turn out to be better than children at acquiring a new language skill.

It is widely believed that children younger than 7 are good at picking up new languages because their brains rewire themselves more easily, and because they use what is called procedural, or implicit, memory to learn - meaning they pick up a new language without giving it conscious thought. Adults are thought to rely on explicit memory, whereby they actively learn the rules of a language.

By Jehan Perera

Defeats suffered by the ruling alliance at the local authority elections in the North would have come as a disappointment to the government, which registered its accustomed victories elsewhere in the country. For the past month a formidable array of government ministers, said to be as many as 40, are reported to have spent much time campaigning in the North. This included President Mahinda Rajapaksa himself. Although the election laws disavow the offering of material inducements during the campaign period, these government leaders did not go empty handed to the North. The government`s media itself took pride in mentioning that goods as diverse as water pumps, sarees and squatting pans had been distributed amongst the people. While there was no doubt that the war affected people of the North could do with this largesse, the election period was not the appropriate time to concentrate such efforts in term of the electoral law that forbids cheating.
