Chaminda Vaas Ready To Face England If Call Comes From Sri Lanka
Wednesday, 1 June 2011 - 2:14 PM SL Time
|
Vaas says he would consider a Test comeback at Lord`s
Veteran bowler would strengthen Sri Lanka pace attack
Chaminda Vaas, who took 355 Test wickets for Sri Lanka, has told the Guardian he would consider returning to represent his country in the second Test, which starts at Lord`s on Friday.
The 37-year-old opening bowler retired from the long form of international cricket in July 2009, but the skill and stamina he showed in taking seven Glamorgan wickets for Northamptonshire on Tuesday confirmed he would unquestionably strengthen the tourists` weak and inexperienced pace attack.

Sri Lanka Faces Day Of Judgment At Lord`s
Thursday, 2 June 2011 - 1:24 PM SL Time
|
Sri Lanka`s new captain Tillekaratne Dilshan will have just two days to pick up the pieces and regroup with his under-fire team as he seeks to overcome a devastating blow of losing the first Test unlike any he had ever seen that would have left even the host country England shocked.
`It`s very difficult to explain things. I can`t simply imagine that we got out in 24 overs, given that we have a good batting line up. Unfortunately we lost the match because we batted really bad`, said Dilshan who was virtually thrown into the deep end to see his team swim or sink like a stone.

Dilshan Challenges England Bowlers For A Shoot-Out
Friday, 3 June 2011 - 11:22 AM SL Time

By Callistus Davy at Lord`s, London
Beleaguered Sri Lanka skipper Tillekaratne Dilshan yesterday threw down the gauntlet for England`s fast bowlers to come after his batsmen saying he`ll accept no kindergarten approach from his team in the second cricket Test which starts here at Lord`s in London today.
Dilshan claimed the team had brushed off the psychological hangover of the first Test defeat and were only focussed on the second Test at a venue where Sri Lanka is yet to record a victory with the previous five encounters at Lord`s ending in two wins for England with the rest drawn.

Sri Lanka Ready For Lord`s Test: Dilshan:

Sri Lanka skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan says his side will draw on their `good memories` of playing at Lord`s as they seek to bounce back in the second npower Test.
Dilshan`s first Test as captain ended in a traumatic innings and 14 run defeat in Cardiff as their highly rated batting line-up were bundled out for just 82 on the final evening.
The 34-year-old backed his batsmen to draw on the experience playing at the Home of Cricket though as they seek to avoid a series loss.

England Rally After Top Order Collapse
Saturday, 4 June 2011 - 4:33 PM SL Time
|
England fought back after losing their first three wickets in the space of half an hour to reach 342 for six on the opening day of the second test against Sri Lanka at Lord`s on Friday.
Alastair Cook gave another display of immense concentration and application after watching Andrew Strauss (4), Jonathan Trott (2) and Kevin Pietersen (2) depart in swift succession. Opener Cook was only four runs short of what would have been his sixth century in nine tests when he skied an attempted pull off Dilhara Fernando and was caught at mid-on.

The current financial quandary baffling the cricket`s controlling body at the Maitland Place has hit the cricketers hard, as the SLC has not only delayed signing the fresh player contracts, but has not paid their dues for the last two months running.
Sources said that the contracts including the central contracts of the national players expired on March 31, but the empty coffers had forced them to delay it indefinitely with false promises.

Legend At Lord`s Wounded Warrior Tillekaratne Dilshan Rewrites The Record Books At The Home Of Cricket
Monday, 6 June 2011 - 12:16 PM SL Time

By Callistus Davy at Lord`s, London
A battered and bruised Tillekaratne Dilshan rewrote history by making the highest individual score for his country at the home of cricket here in Lord`s, London on the second day of the second cricket Test against England yesterday.
It was the stuff that makes legends and Dilshan booked his place among them, an elite club that does not include the names of the top five run-makers in world cricket Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting, Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis who have never made a century at Lord`s.

There is strong talk here and a newspaper carried the story that former Sri Lanka captain and blaster of bowling Sanath Jayasuriya has been picked in Sri Lanka`s squad for the Five one-day and Twenty20 Internationals against England which begins after the Three Npower Test series.
I spoke to Chairman of Selectors and Selector on tour here Duleep Mendis and asked him for confirmation whether the Jayasuriya story was true.

SLC Announces Sri Lanka `A` Team Squad For Tour Of England
Saturday, 11 June 2011 - 12:49 PM SL Time

Wicket keeper-batsman Kaushal Silva will lead Sri Lanka A in their upcoming tour of England in July, a press release from Sri Lanka Cricket states.
Silva, who is behind Prasanna Jayawardene in the national team pecking order, will be assisted by Dinesh Chandimal. On a personal front, this is an important tour for Silva since Jayawardene scored a career defining century in Cardiff and Chandimal is also waiting in the wings.
The squad is heavily armoured with the form players of the recently concluded Premier League. Dinesh Chandimal and Sajeewa Weerakoon finished the season as the highest run getter and wicket taker respectively.

I have waited for this day and all my team-mates are guiding me. To get a hundred in England is very great and my confidence is very high. Unlike in Sri Lanka the ball keeps swinging around and it`s a big challenge , said the soft spoken 21-year old Thirimanne after he smashed a century in Sri Lanka`s last three-day match against Essex.

Hopes of captain Tillakaratne Dilshan recovering in time to play the third and final Test Match against England at the Rose Bowl in Southampton didn`t materialise as the 34-year-old was ruled out of the game. Dilshan sustained a hairline fracture on his right thumb during his record breaking 193 at Lord`s, during the drawn second Test against England and although the batsman was expecting a speedy recovery to play the third Test, Sri Lanka opted not to risk him with the five-match ODI series against England to follow the Test series.

Sangakkara Promises Fearless Approach
Thursday, 16 June 2011 - 1:11 PM SL Time

Kumar Sangakkara has promised Sri Lanka will show plenty of positive intent at the Rose Bowl as they seek to keep their good record against England intact.
Victory for the tourists in the third Test would give them a share of the series spoils and leave England without a Test series win over Sri Lanka since 2002.
Sangakkara, who admits he was reluctant to stand in as captain for the Test after Tillakaratne Dilshan was ruled out by a broken thumb, insists that Sri Lanka`s approach needs to reflect that proud record.

Injuries And Rain Affect Sri Lanka`s Efforts To Square Series

Rose Bowl becomes England`s tenth Test venue
Rex Clementine reporting from Southampton
Sri Lanka`s efforts to square the three-match Test series against England won`t be helped by the fact that their captain Tillakaratne Dilshan won`t take the field due to a fractured right thumb, here at Rose Bowl as the tourists take on England in the third and final Test Match between the countries starting today.
Dilshan is the in-form Sri Lankan batsman having posted a career best 193 at Lord`s during the last Test. He also hit two centuries at the start of the tour during warm-up games against Middlesex and England Lions. The weather forecast too doesn`t look good at all for the five days of the Test Match providing a further blow to the visitors` chances of squaring the series 1-1.

Poor Form Of Mahela And Sanga Surprises Marvan

Sri Lanka`s batting coach Marvan Atapattu was surprised by the form of heavyweights Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, who are yet to score a half-century in the three match Test series against England.
Both batsmen have had five innings so far in the series, but are yet to post a half-century and their form is a major reason for Sri Lanka`s poor show in the Test series. The tourists lost the first Test in Cardiff by an innings and 14 runs after being bowled out for 82 runs in the second innings and drew the second Test thanks largely to a swashbuckling 193 by captain Tillakaratne Dilshan.

What was different from his innings is that he never played a single rash shot and not even the England bowlers may grudge him for defying them for more than five hours to reach his century of which an hour was spent to move from 89 to the three-figure mark, a painful way to atone for the first innings when he threw away his wicket unbecoming of a player from whom nothing short of the best will be accepted.

Injuries, Sri Lanka`s Main Concern Ahead Of T-20 International

Ever wonder why Angelo Mathews was not selected as Sri Lanka cricket team`s new vice captain, or how Thilina Kandamby, who not long ago was struggling to find a place in the team, landed there.

And just for the record, the selection committee headed by Aravinda de Silva resigned. Captain Kumar Sangakkara and his deputy Mahela Jayawrdena soon followed.

Jayasuriya, What a Cricketer Allan Border
Krish Sripada
On 28th of this month, 2 days before he turns 42, one of the greatest ODI cricketers of all time would be seen on the cricket field for the last time. Ironically, ODI cricket, passing through some troubled times itself, would lose one of its greatest servants, when Sanath Jayasuriya hangs his boots and calls it a day. What he means to cricket and Sri Lankan cricket in particular, is obvious from the respectable retirement that SL cricket has granted him. This comes at an age when most other cricketers of this competitive era, find themselves too old to hold the famed bat and run the 21 yards.
