Wasantha Udanaya 2011 - Bandarawela
Tuesday, 3 May 2011 - 5:11 PM SL Time
|
Sharing some of the photos captured during my visit to the largest carnival in the Uva Province, Wasantha Udanaya 2011, which was held from April 15th to 20th at the Bandarawela UC Grounds.
The event was marred by heavy rain most of the time and still there were enough local crowds in attendance in addition to the holiday-makers as well.
Almost all the games of the 114th annual open ranking tennis tournament were hampered by the weather as well. The last photo here of the Bandarawela Tennis Club will explain it all.

We Can Surprise England - Ramanayake
Sunday, 15 May 2011 - 4:31 PM SL Time
|
By Sa`adi Thawfeeq
Fast bowling coach Champaka Ramanayake is confident that his young and inexperienced charges could spring a surprise or two on England in the upcoming three-Test series.
Yes, we have one of the most inexperienced fast bowling line-ups taken to England. Except for Dilhara Fernando the others haven`t played much Test cricket at all. We have the disadvantage of inexperience but looking at it the other way none of the English players have played against our fast bowlers before. It`s an unknown attack to them. I think with that we can unsettle them still, said Ramanayake.

|
Sri Lankans are visiting England and few think SL batsmen will struggle in test Cricket under English conditions.
Let us take a look at a few matches and the records of our players who have performed well in England.
SL has only played 10 test matches since 1984. Eng won 05 and SL won 02 but since 1996 (after SL won the WC) England 03 to SL 02. Not a bad record at all.
At Lords, the home of Cricket - 05 Sri Lankans have scored 100`s.
Siddath Wettimuny-190, Duleep Mendis-111 (scored 94 in the 02nd innings) Amal Silva-102, Marvan Attapattu-185, Mahela Jayawardena-107 in 2002 and 119 in 2006.

Sri Lanka enjoyed a successful warm-up ahead of their Test series against England with a four-wicket win over Middlesex on the third and final day of their tour opener at Uxbridge on Monday.
Several batsmen spent time in the middle, Thilan Samaraweera leading the way with 49, as Sri Lanka chased down a target of 213 with five overs to spare.
As Sri Lanka captain Tilakaratne Dilshan (123) and fellow opener Tharanga Paranavitana (103) both made first innings hundreds, the tourists decided to alter their batting line-up second time around.

Sri Lanka Face Tough Warm-Up
Thursday, 19 May 2011 - 5:08 PM SL Time
|
Sri Lanka will step up their preparations for the first Test against England when they face a strong Lions side at Derby. It`s a sign of the depth in English cricket that a formidable second team can be drawn up and they should give the tourists a good idea of their readiness for Cardiff.
Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, along with the other three players who spent an extra week at the IPL, have arrived so the visitors are now at full strength. Facing the likes of Steven Finn, Ajmal Shahzad and Graham Onions, who has made an impressive return to action after a career-threatening back injury, will be a good test of adjustment for them on a Derby pitch that often offers help to the pace bowlers.

We have a situation at the moment where the ICC is dominated by India.
They tell Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and one or two other countries what to do and they always get the vote.

Dilshan Hundred Leads Sri Lanka`s Fightback
Sunday, 22 May 2011 - 5:56 PM SL Time
|
After two tough days against England Lions, the Sri Lankans put up a better fight having been asked to follow on but still face the prospect of defeat ahead of the first Test. Tillakaratne Dilshan led a much more convincing display with a brisk 117 in an opening stand of 200 with Tharanga Paranavitana who built a composed 125. However, the Lions chipped away and by the close had six wickets for their hard work with the tourists 165 ahead.
Although a defeat wouldn`t be ideal, it is always important for a visiting team to have an in-form captain and Dilshan will be one of the most confident Sri Lanka batsmen. This innings followed his 123 against Middlesex, at Uxbridge, and he was above a run-a-ball for the majority of his stay. England`s bowlers will have to be on the spot straight away with the new ball otherwise an innings can get a head start with Dilshan`s attacking play.

Sri Lanka have called up in-form all rounder Farveez Maharoof once again into the Test squad as cover for injury prone paceman Dilhara Fernando, who is in doubt for the first Test against England starting on Thursday at Cardiff, team sources in England told Daily Mirror yesterday.
Fernando who had been handed the unenviable task of spearheading the Sri Lankan pace attack by the national selectors for the tour of England, has been carrying a nagging pain in his knee, but still bowled with determination and fire as he captured three wickets to help Sri Lanka pull off a stunning victory against the strong England Lions on Sunday.

Prasanna Hundred Takes Sri Lanka To 400

Becomes second Sri Lankan wicketkeeper to score hundred against England
Rex Clementine
reporting from Cardiff
When Sri Lanka indicated that they will stick to a combination of six batsmen and five bowlers in the first Test against England here in the Welsh capital of Cardiff with wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene occupying the crucial number six slot, there were those who didn`t take the idea with too much of fondness.
The doubts looked to be reasonable as well when you take a look at some of the players who occupy the number six lot in Test cricket. For India it`s VVS Laxman while Pakistan have Umar Akmal and England Eoin Morgan. But Prasanna Jayawardene here at Sophia Gardens yesterday proved doubts about his batting abilities wrong with a glorious hundred at number six to put Sri Lanka in an impregnable position on the second day of the opening Test in the three match series.

But the pair showed patience initially and then exerted their authority.
Cook ended the day on 129 not out, with Trott unbeaten on 125 to leave England 287-2, trailing the tourists by 113.

Trott, 30, had notched up his sixth Test hundred on Saturday and was unbeaten on 125 overnight. England resumed with the total on 287 for two and with Farveez Maharoof and Thisara Perera bowling a tidy line, Trott refrained from taking undue risks.
