India Announces Fresh USD 500 Million Assistance To Afghanistan

In a rare honour extended to a visiting forign dignitory, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh addressed a joint session of the Afghan parliament saying that their two countries are united in fighting terror.

He also backed efforts to bring peace to Afghanistan through reconciliation with Taliban insurgents.

Correspondents say it is a rare honour for a foreign leader to address the Afghan parliament. He is the first premier to give a speech to the joint houses in recent years and this is being seen a sign of the deepening links between the two countries.

Inda Gets Elected To UN Human Rights Council

United Nations India and 14 other countries have been elected to the 47-nation UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) based in Geneva.

India was not in competition for the seat since there were four countries and four seats for the Asia block. With 189 countries voting, Indonesia received 184 votes, Philippines 183, India 181 and Kuwait 166.

Other countries to be elected to the Council included Burkina Faso, Botswana, Congo, Benin, Czech Republic, Romania, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Italy and Austria.

This is a heartening short film in Tamil and is a must watch. One of the best I have come across ever.

Incredible creativity in movie making is visible in Tamil Nadu these days. I hope it will last and will go even further in the future.

Is India now living on woman power?

India`s President is a woman. So are the speaker of the parliament, the leader of the opposition and the chairperson of coalition in power.

Now more women than ever are holding powerful political roles in India after two female regional leaders scored massive victories in state assembly elections.

Their wins meant that women now directly administer a third of the 1.2 billion population in India, where girls are often still seen as a liability and female foeticide has skewed gender ratios.

Angela Merkel in India for joint cabinet meet

NEW DELHI: India and Germany will hold their first inter-governmental consultations at the cabinet-level when Chancellor Angela Merkel visits New Delhi on Tuesday on an invitation from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

India is the first Asian country and one of very few nations with which Germany holds a joint cabinet meeting and this is seen as a recognition of the country`s rapidly growing economic clout and technological prowess.

India was one of the first nations to recognise the Federal Republic of Germany, when it was carved out of the three zones occupied by the western allies at the end of World War II and Merkel will be paying tribute to 60 years of `successful` diplomatic relations between the two countries.
