Jayawardene Hails Skipper Sangakkara

Former captain Mahela Jayawardene on Thursday heaped rich praise on his successor Kumar Sangakkara and said that the team members were in sync with the current skipper.

`He knows what exactly he wants from the team.

Tactically, you can`t doubt him, he knows inside and outside of the game. He reads it well. He has got all other guys reading the same book and same page. So he has got everything under control,` he said.

`Kumar is fantastic. He has set goals for himself like with his batting and everything in the last five or six years.

Sangakkara Asks His Boys Is Keep It Simple

Mumbai: Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara had a simple message for his team on the eve of Saturday`s World Cup final here against India: `Score more runs and take quick wickets` to give them the Cup a second time after 1996.

Sangakkara, who was part of the side that finished runners-up in 2007, called on his players to lift their performance. He did not want a repeat of the last World Cup final, when Sri Lanka was comprehensively beaten by Australia.

Sri Lanka suffered a heavy blow on the eve of the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup against India when all-rounder Angelo Mathews was ruled out of the game with a right thigh strain.

Mathews has been a crucial member of the Sri Lankan ODI outfit ever since making his debut two years ago and the team management were waiting with their fingers crossed hoping he would recover, but the 24-year-old was ruled out of the game and a request to draft in off-spinner Suraj Randiv was approved by the ICC Event Technical Committee.

RUNNER-UP TO INDIA IN FINALS:

Sri Lanka cricket team finished No. 2 in the world after losing to India by six wickets in the final of the ICC World Cup tournament concluded in Mumbai last night.

It was so much near but yet so far for Sri Lanka which emerged runner-up of an ICC World Cup tournament for the second successive time, after finishing runner-up to India in the 2007 Final played in Barbados.

Sangakkara Demands End To Sri Lanka Stagefright

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara has warned that his team need to overcome their showpiece stagefright if they are ever to win another World Cup after a third shattering loss in a major final.

Since capturing the 1996 World Cup, Sri Lanka have been runners-up in the 2007 and 2011 finals as well as the 2009 World Twenty20.

Rajapaksa Hosts Reception For Team

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa hosted a reception for the country`s cricket team that was runner-up at the World Cup at his residence, Temple Trees, on Monday.

Mr. Rajapaksa handed over a memento to each of the players.

Kumar Sangakkara To Step Down As Sri Lankan Skipper

Sri Lankan skipper Kumara Sangakkara on Tuesday told Headlines Today that he was going to quit the national cricket team`s captaincy.

Sangakkara said he has already met the Lankan board officials and communicated his decision and said he felt that following the ICC World Cup finals defeat at the hands of Indian team it was time someone else took over as the captain of the Lankan cricket team.

I Resign To Let Selectors Groom Future Leader - Sanga

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara says he quit the captaincy of the national cricket team so that national selectors could groom another player for the next World Cup. Sangakkara (33) told the media yesterday that he`s quitting as captain from ODI and T-20 cricket with immediate effect, but will be available to lead the side for the Test series against England and Australia, if the selectors require his services.

As promised prior to the start of the Cricket World Cup 2011 tournament, amidst all the busy work I still managed to keep the LNP Cricket going by keeping you all updated of the mega event on a day to day basis.
