THE QUIET FINALISTS

Behind Sri Lanka`s understated, unfussy style is a team performing with ruthless efficiency and playing with confidence
Sambit Bal in Mumbai
March 31, 2011
Away from the arch lights and drum beats, Sri Lanka have arrived at the final not quite unnoticed but in the unfussy manner that befits a team that plays vibrantly but rarely boisterously. Their journey to the final has been quiet and efficient they have rarely been stretched and, apart from a brief middle-order stutter against New Zealand in the semi-final, their progress through the knockout phase has been so smooth it`s almost eerie.

Blake sees `people to people` ties through militaries
[TamilNet, Thursday, 07 April 2011, 13:36 GMT]
The US Asst Secretary of State Robert O Blake, giving testimony before the US House Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday said that the value of the skyrocketing US arms sales to India over the last decade is not just the dollar figure they both represent and strengthen deeper levels of cooperation between our two militaries and facilitate building people-to-people ties. On Sri Lanka Blake said: Positioned directly on the shipping routes that carry petroleum products and other trade from the Gulf to East Asia, Sri Lanka remains of strategic interest to the U.S. An important contributor to global peacekeeping operations, Sri Lanka stands poised to be a capable and willing partner to effectively combat violent extremism, trafficking and piracy, and thereby help to ensure the maritime security of the region.

`Blake is shaking in his shoes` -reports Tamilnet
Sunday, 10 April 2011 - 11:27 PM SL Time
|
The US Asst Secretary of State Robert O Blake has set a wrong precedence by choosing to respond to a chauvinistic Sinhala perspective appeared in The Island editorial that the United States does not support separatism but rather a united, peaceful and democratic Sri Lanka. In doing so, Blake insults the democratic mandate of the nation of Eezham Tamils and encourages a terrorist state that openly commits genocide on one hand and blatantly denies even an iota of its human rights abuses on the other. The rhetoric of Blake, `peace, democracy and united Sri Lanka`, is a historically proven bundle of contradictions that always went against the nation of Eezham Tamils, writes TamilNet political commentator in Colombo.

the U.S. dropped over 2 million tonnes of bombs in Laos, more than all of the bombs dropped during the World War II.
Monday, 18 April 2011 - 12:40 AM SL Time
|
During the Vietnam war between the United States of America and Vietnam, Laos was caught in the middle. That unprecidented war drew the Soviet Union (Russia), China, Thailand and many other countries into the horrible conflicts.
The CIA without any support of the American people created a secret war in Laos by recruiting the hill tribe people in the eastern part of Laos to fight the Communist North Vietnamese troops in Laos. When it was all over, the U.S had turned a tiny Laos into a second moon face of the earth.

Tuesday, 19 April 2011 - 12:25 AM SL Time

Prime Minister of Canada and leader of the Conservative Party Stephen Harper has ratcheted up his warnings against a Liberal-led minority government, saying it would advance the cause of Quebec separatism.
Quoting comments made Sunday by Gilles Duceppe, the Conservative leader said the Bloc Qu b cois sees a Conservative majority government as a threat to an independent Quebec, reports The Globe and Mail of Canada.
The Bloc Leader has said that ... his objective is the sovereignty of Quebec and another Quebec referendum, Mr. Harper told reporters at a campaign event in this suburban Vancouver community, and he has said that step one to achieving that is to stop a Conservative majority government in Ottawa.

US campaigned heavy-handedly to help Israel escape UN war crimes probe: WikiLeaks
19 April 2011 11:39:00 AM by ANI ( Leave a comment )
Washington, April 19(ANI): The United States led a vigorous campaign to hinder the progress of an independent UN investigation into possible war crimes in the aftermath of Israel`s 2008-2009 intervention in the Gaza Strip, according to diplomatic cables unveiled by whistle-blower website WikiLeaks.
The new cables provide a rare glimpse behind the scenes at the United Nations as American diplomats sought to shield Israel`s military from outside scrutiny over its conduct during Operation Cast Lead, Foreign Policy reports.

Why now, Sri Lankans ask after UN war crimes report
Wednesday, 20 April 2011 - 1:04 AM SL Time
|
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - A UN report alleging tens of thousands of civilians were killed and war crimes committed at the end Sri Lanka`s war in 2009 drew widespread political reaction on Tuesday, but left many ordinary Sri Lankans bemused at what purpose an investigation would serve.
The UN panel found `credible allegations` of civilian deaths, which it blamed mostly on the government, and urged the prosecution of those responsible for violations in the last stage of a quarter-century war with ethnic Tamil separatists.
