Dispatch From the Frontlines : Why the Libyan rebels are struggling.
Tuesday, 5 April 2011 - 11:33 AM SL Time

Near Brega, Libya Somewhere on the road between the cities of Ajdabiya and Brega, amid the wreckage of charred tanks destroyed by Western airstrikes, the Libyan rebels prepare their next advance. Armed with anti-tank missiles and rocket launchers, they look like a fierce bunch. But their panoply of Russian weapons, pilfered from the country`s military bases, paints a deceiving portrait of an advancing army. These undisciplined fighters do not even know how to properly clean their machine guns.

Steve Harley - Make Me Smile
Wednesday, 13 April 2011 - 10:46 PM SL Time

You`ve done it all, you`ve broken every code
And pulled the rebel to the floor
You spoilt the game, no matter what you say
For only metal - what a bore!
Blue eyes, blue eyes, how come you tell so many lies?

Come up and see me, make me smile
Or do what you want, run on wild

There`s nothing left, all gone and run away
Maybe you`ll tarry for a while
It`s just a test, a game for us to play
Win or lose, it`s hard to smile
Resist, resist, it`s from yourself you have to hide

Retweeting democracy
Thursday, 14 April 2011 - 7:57 PM SL Time

The US is training anti-government activists from the Middle East and North Africa on how to spread democracy with the help of modern computer technology.
One of the latest developments is the panic button .

According to the State Department, the application can be uploaded onto activists` cell phones. In case they get detained, the software instantly erases the contact book in their phones and sends a warning alert signal to other activists.

It looks like the application could soon be in demand one push of a button and the evidence is gone. American officials claim the best of intentions, saying it is to protect pro-democracy forces in other countries. But many will be wondering if the innovation will be something also welcomed by drug dealers, criminals and terrorists.

Friday, 22 April 2011 - 3:09 PM SL Time

Qatar, a tiny pinprick of a country half way up the Gulf, sticking out like a thumb from the Arabian peninsula, and now reckoned to be the richest country in the world.

Its total population is around 1.6m, but of those, only about 250,000 are Qatari. The rest are foreign workers who keep the place going, build its gleaming high-rise offices and hotels, and staff its service industries.

Qatar is awash in oil and natural gas, and if you ask why there have been no protests in Qatar, the answer you get is: `Because there`s no reason to protest.`
