`India were a step ahead of us` - Sangakkara
Sunday, 3 April 2011 - 8:59 AM SL Time

Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka captain, took heart from his team`s performance to reach the final of the World Cup but described the defeat to India in Mumbai as `hugely disappointing`

Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni struck match-winning 90s to get India`s chase on track after those two early setbacks, and Sangakkara admitted his bowlers didn`t apply enough pressure. `After we got the first two wickets, we weren`t really tight enough with our bowling. We bowled quite a few loose balls and Gambhir and Kohli made us pay for that. MS really stuck it out there and saw through the tough periods. Once they matched and then went past the asking-rate, it was very difficult to pull them back.

Move towards direct democracy
Sunday, 10 April 2011 - 8:13 AM SL Time

These events across the seas must resonate in Sri Lanka, surely. It was this very week that a Cabinet Minister close to the President complained that the country`s construction industry was doomed to failure because of corruption. He cited examples of contractors bribing officials to get their shoddy plans and sites passed. What he did not say was how officials in government and municipal agencies need to be greased not only to break the law but act in order to protect others who break the law.

Is Sharapova back as a real contender?
Thursday, 14 April 2011 - 6:42 PM SL Time

Maria Sharapova`s driving forehand doesn`t really fill me with wonder and excitement, but I am full of admiration for her drive to succeed.

She burst onto the tennis scene as a 17-year-old in 2004, beating two-time defending champion Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final, but having reached the top of the rankings herself, her career went into decline from late 2008 after a long absence due to injury.

With her looks, physique, and bulging bank balance, the Russian could have easily retired with her three major titles in hand, safe in the knowledge that her name is imprinted in the record books and her face likely to adorn the cover of glossy magazines for years to come.

Govt. digging in for battle with UN. - Sundaytimes lashes out UPFA
Sunday, 1 May 2011 - 8:01 AM SL Time

Naturally, Dr. Peiris, the country`s External Affairs Minister, expected foreign governments and the United Nations to believe what he said was the true position. Is this fact or mere fiction?

As he spoke to foreign diplomats on Thursday morning at the External Affairs Ministry in Fort, just over a kilometre away, at a news conference at the Mahaweli Centre at Green Path, a senior Cabinet colleague, Dallas Allahapperuma, said just the opposite. This is how last Thursday`s state run Daily News reported the event under the headline ` UPFA May Day rally - THOUSANDS TO SHOW NATION`S OPPOSITION TO DARUSMAN REPORT.` It said,`Sixteen parties allied to the United People`s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), trade unions, other organisations and hundreds of thousands of people will participate in UPFA May Day rally, which will show the nation`s opposition to the Darusman Report, SLFP Treasurer and the Vocational Training and Skills Development Minister Dullas Allahapperuma said.
