|
Sri Lanka plans to release a new consumer-price index by the end of June to accurately reflect household spending and assess price movements, a director at the Department of Census and Statistics said.
We are seeing a shift from food to non-food consumption, D.C.A. Gunawardena said by telephone today from Colombo. The new gauge will be based on the spending pattern of households in the capital Colombo in 2006 and 2007, compared with the current index that tracks 2002 consumption, he said.

UN backs action against Gaddafi
Friday, 18 March 2011 - 10:13 AM SL Time
|
The UN Security Council has backed a no-fly zone over Libya and `all necessary measures` short of an invasion `to protect civilians and civilian-populated areas`.
In New York, the 15-member body voted 10-0 in favour, with five abstentions.
Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi`s forces have recently retaken several towns seized by rebels in an uprising.
Rebel forces reacted with joy in their Benghazi stronghold but a government spokesman condemned UN `aggression`.
The US ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, said: `This resolution should send a strong message to Colonel Gaddafi and his regime that the violence must stop, the killing must stop and the people of Libya must be protected and have the opportunity to express themselves freely.`

Vegetable prices won t bring down govt., says Premajayantha
Sunday, 20 March 2011 - 8:48 AM SL Time
|
UPFA General Secretary Minister Susil Premjayantha says the Opposition should know that high price of vegetables wouldn`t bring down President Mahinda Rajapaksa`s government. Commenting on the UPFA triumph over the Opposition at the Mar. 17 LG polls, Premjayantha asserted the Opposition seemed to be unrealistic and foolish in its assumption that people would vote against the government over high cost of living.
Those who believed the price of `pathola` or recent floods in some parts of the country could be decisive factors at Thursday`s poll would now realize the idiocy in their thinking, the minister said.

Another reason why we need Gadaffi to stay on..... :)
Saturday, 26 March 2011 - 9:38 AM SL Time

The world knows him as a dictator and a `self-styled` leader who has ruled the North African country of Libya for the last 41 years. Since the coup he engineered in 1969, Muammar Muhammad al-Gaddafi, has allegedly indulged in state-sponsored terrorism and human rights abuse.
During his long rule, Gaddafi, who is believed to have amassed billions of dollars, has been fearless and dominant. He has even defended the Somali Pirates and the Taliban in a UN speech.
Gaddafi`s Bodyguards has been much talked about. His 40-member, all female bodyguard contingent is responsible for his protection.

Fresh air strikes have been reported at Sabha in central Libya.
Libyan state television said military and civilian areas had been hit, but there was no independent confirmation.

India`s Poonam Pandey has followed in the footsteps of many a beautiful model by getting pulses racing and vowing to strip naked if her country wins the World Cup.
