Eminent Lankan astrologer predicts mixed results for Sri Lanka
By Bandula Sirimanna

Evaluating the current planetary positions of Sri Lanka, famed Sri Lankan astrologer Piyasena Rathuwithana, told members of the Sunday Times Business Club (STBC) last week that the ` turbulent ` period for Sri Lanka in terms of its economy and politics will be between November 2011 and November 2012 as the transition of `Rahu and Kethu` as well as the change of position of Saturn to Virgo is not favourable for the country during its latter stages.

Canada on verge of deporting man who brought a tyrant to justice

By Michael Petrou - Friday, January 28, 2011 at 11:44 AM - 41 Comments

Cindor Reeves, a man largely responsible for bringing to justice one of the most blood-soaked tyrants in recent history, has had his refugee case rejected by Canada and may soon be deported to his native Liberia, where he runs a high risk of being murdered.

Reeves was the brother-in-law of Charles Taylor, who in 1989 launched a civil war in Liberia that killed more than 200,000 and left Taylor in charge of much of the country. Taylor was elected president during a brief lull in the fighting in 1997. Taylor also created a proxy army in neighbouring Sierra Leone that called itself the Revolutionary United Front, or RUF. The RUF`s child soldiers terrorized Sierra Leone for years. Taylor used them to obtain diamonds. He sent the RUF weapons they sent him gems. Thousands died as a result.

Your Sense of Self-Allure Like an Autumn Lily In the Hand.- From the Fake Buddhist.
Thursday, 10 February 2011 - 10:13 PM SL Time

Crush
your sense of self-allure

Nurture only the path to peace
Unbinding

Comments:
The Buddha taught that our suffering comes from the belief that we are a self that is a permanent, abiding entity. When we assume an identity based on our bodies, senses, emotions, tactile sensations, perceptions, and mental fabrications, as well as what we are conscious of, we are bound to suffer.

This is because we claim the body, the bodies of others, the senses, emotions, tactile sensations, perceptions, mental fabrications, and consciousness as our own, even though they are continually arising and passing away. They are forever changing and impermanent.

Has Some Lunatic Professor From Jaffna University asked Sex from Gaja ??
Saturday, 12 February 2011 - 2:31 AM SL Time

I read Gaja Lakshmi Paramasivam`s long piece containing rather incoherent thoughts rambling between my piece, her own achievements and problems and other extraneous religious matters. There are also factual errors in her response which need not detain us here. Ms. Paramsivam is obviously talented. She is an activist and I admire her for it. What I seek to focus on, however, is her inexcusable excusing of the pursuit of pleasures by Prof. Shanmugalingam which she implies were not seen and/or known to have interfered with his work, or in breach of rules.

Talk is worthless, while PRACTICE has limitless value
Sunday, 13 February 2011 - 2:41 AM SL Time

Hello Everyone!
The Buddha said:

Simply talking a lot
doesn`t mean one is wise.
Whoever`s secure
No hostility,
fear
is said to be wise.

Simply talking a lot
doesn`t maintain the Dhamma.
Whoever
although he`s heard next to nothing
sees Dhamma through his body,
is not heedless of Dhamma:
he`s one who maintains the Dhamma.
Dhp 19

Comments:
When we read and study the discourses of the Buddha are we truly practicing that which we are hearing? Do we use the dhamma as a tool to incite arguments, debate, and discord? Do we teach others the dhamma without clearly perceiving the truth of dhamma as a result of practice and direct experience? Do we talk a lot about dhamma theory without applying it in our daily lives?

Sri Lanka reservoirs may need larger sluice gates, canals
Feb 14, 2011 (LBO) - Sri Lanka`s reservoirs including those planned or under construction may have to be re-designed with larger spill gates and canals to evacuate excess water following recent rare floods in quick succession this year, officials said.

Does Vinnaana Influence OR Dictate Initial Human Evolution ? - what is your opinion ?
Friday, 18 February 2011 - 11:56 PM SL Time

Buddhism is not an overly metaphysical religion. It is more oriented toward phenomenology rather than metaphysics, which has contributed to some questions as to whether Buddhism should be regarded as a religion at all. Buddhism can not be regarded as existentialism either since nothing can be proven to exist according to the teachings. And it can not be regarded as nihilism since nothing can be proven not to exist. Buddhism falls into a category by itself.

However, there is one scripture in which the Buddha does appear to give a highly detailed answer to this issue. This is the Agga a Sutta, found in the Pali Canon, in which the Buddha, speaking to the monk Vasettha, a former Brahmin, states the following:

From Tibetan Buddhism - What is Vinnana (Awareness) - To Silibiris
Saturday, 19 February 2011 - 11:50 PM SL Time

The Eye of the Beholder

So far much has been said about the nature of phenomena perceived by an awareness, but this act of perception has not been described. The four schools of Buddhism maintain that there are `sense consciousnesses`, such as an eye consciousness, which perceive objects. Since Svatantrikas accept that phenomena are established by way of their own character, they believe that sense consciousnesses perceive objects as they exist, barring any superficial causes of error. The Prasangikas claim that this is like saying that our horse is appearing as it really is although it is actually an illusion. To perceive an object as existing by way of its own character is mistaken, but to avoid contradicting the world, it is said that sense-direct perceivers are non-mistaken conventionally. It bears stating at this point that throughout all of this talk about the false appearance of objects, it is not permissible to traffic with totally imaginary phenomena. The classic example of this is the horn of a rabbit. No such thing exists any argument based on the existence of such is false, and any argument that fails to account for the ear of a rabbit, which does exist conventionally, is false.

Canadian - LTTEers Thrash Sinhale Here But, They want to Involve in the Development in Sri Lanka. Do You Believe it ??
Monday, 21 February 2011 - 8:47 AM SL Time

The news reported is that the High Commissioner for Canada in Sri Lanka wants Sri Lanka to accommodate the Canadian Tamil Diaspora. It further states that he emphasized the importance of giving the Canada-based Tamil Diaspora an opportunity to be a part of the re-building and reconciliation process . That is indeed good news ONLY if Mr. Levy has confirmation from the Canada based Tamil Diaspora that they want to be a part of the rebuilding process. If he has got their commitment, he should publicise it both in Canada and Sri Lanka as otherwise his views are merely wishful thinking.

Mubarak Toppled by CIA Because He Opposed US Plans for War with Iran US Eyes Seizure of Suez Canal Was this the Threat that Forced Mubarak to Quit?
Webster G. Tarpley, Ph.D.
TARPLEY.net

Washington DC, Feb. 18, 2011 There never was an Egyptian revolution, but rather a behind-the-scenes military putsch by a junta of CIA puppet generals who evidently could not succeed in their goal of ousting Hosni Mubarak without the help of a heavy-duty ultimatum from Washington in the night between Thursday, February 10 and Friday, February 11, 2011. There is growing evidence that the threat in question involved the seizure or blocking of the Suez Canal, the Egyptian waterway which carries over 8% of all seaborne world trade, which the imperialists tried to grab back in 1956, and from which they would today like to exclude China, Iran, and Russia. As for Mubarak, there are strong indications that he was toppled by Washington and London because he opposed the current US-UK plan to organize a block of Sunni Arab states such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the Gulf states under a US nuclear umbrella and shoulder to shoulder with Israel for purposes of confrontation and war with Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, and their Shiite and radical allies.

Little Bit of Mayan Calnder for 2011 - 2012
Wednesday, 23 February 2011 - 11:23 PM SL Time

`Many people have an intuitive sense that the end of the Mayan calendar will bring a shift in consciousness. Yet, it is rarely clearly stated or explained exactly what is the source of such a shift, how it will happen or what would be its nature. Maybe however shifts in consciousness are actually a little less mysterious than many people tend to believe. In fact, shifts in consciousness have been happening from the beginning of time and continue to happen whenever there is a significant energy shift in the Mayan calendar, such as between any of its days and nights. Despite all these previous shifts in cosmic history I feel however that there is something very special and significant with the new consciousness that may be expected to be generated by the ninth wave.`

Jaffna A/L Examination system Implemented in the Jaffna University too.
Friday, 25 February 2011 - 7:58 AM SL Time

February 24, Jaffna, Sri Lanka Guardian) In two articles ( Article 1, Article 2) on February 7 and 11 2011, in collaboration with Sri Lanka Guardian, I brought out the corrupt goings-on at University of Jaffna.

An incident I drew attention to involved an LTTE police high-up who had risen in Jaffna`s Faculty of Agriculture and was made Professor very recently though he did not have the required points. A UGC Vice Chairman who came as one of the UGC`s two nominees on the Selection Committee objected when the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. N. Shanmugalingam, raised the marks given by the external experts. But the Vice Chairman gave up when Shanmugalingam insisted on having his way. The story leaked out as other members of the Selection Committee, not having the guts to object directly at the Selection Committee to Shanmugalingam, grumbled everywhere about his partiality.

TNA rejecting 13th Amendment is crucial to spirit of Tamil national polity

[TamilNet, Thursday, 24 February 2011, 13:30 GMT]

13th Amendment that has to be rejected, said Mr. Gajendrakumar Ponnampalam, in a press meet held in Jaffna Wednesday. If there is any fear that undesirable elements may exploit the vacuum, both the TNA and TNPF could jointly field suitable candidates of reputation outside of the parties to meet the situation. But it is crucial that the TNA should reject the 13th Amendment to uphold Tamil national polity.

The Islamic Paradox: Shiite Clerics, Sunni Fundamentalists, and the Coming of Arab Democracy - It was in the planing for some time
Sunday, 27 February 2011 - 1:18 AM SL Time

Q: Do you really think the Middle East can become democratic?

A: Definitely. When you look at the Arabic press since President Bush declared his intention to end the appeal of bin Ladenism through the democratic transformation of the Middle East, it is striking to see how the discussion of democracy now dominates. This doesn`t mean that democracy is going to arrive overnight far from it. It certainly doesn`t mean that there are millions of would-be liberal democrats out there in the sands waiting to take power. But it does clearly show that democratic ideas are building momentum.

ColumnistsDue West: Was George W. Bush right on Arab democracy?
Monday, 28 February 2011 - 1:14 AM SL Time

16/02/2011

Weekly column by Konstantin von Eggert

When Hosni Mubarak announced his resignation, I tuned to Rossiya 24, Russia`s 24/7 all news channel and immediately hit upon a live interview with my former ambassador in Yemen, who also later represented Russia in Tunisia.

Ambassador Veniamin Popov is now teaching at the Moscow Institute of International Relations. Among a lot of very insightful observations about the nature of the Egyptian events, Mr, Popov ventured an opinion, that what we have seen is the twilight of the Western influence in the Middle East as we knew it before. His argument is that the Americans and Europeans have supported the secular Arab autocrats for too long and in a new age of democracy will face a much more hostile public opinion in the Arab countries.

The former Army Commander Gen. Fonseka too was deprived of a similar opportunity by appointing him as the Chief of the defense staff at that time. Despite Gen.
