Friday, 2 December 2011 - 6:45 PM SL Time

The Sri Lankan government is seeking investors for a number of shuttered garment factories.
The government took over 37 enterprises in November through a new law called the Revival of Underperforming Enterprises and Underutilized Assets Act. Of these enterprises, the majority, (around 19) are out-of-business apparel and related factories located inside and outside free trade zones.
`These factories had been closed down for some time. But the government could not take them over because although the land was on lease from the government, the buildings and assets belonged to the companies,` said Mr A Sukumaran, chairman of the JAAF, Sri Lanka`s apparel industry representative body.

COLOMBO: A Sri Lankan government commission`s inquiry into the conduct of the island`s civil war has cleared the military of deliberately targeting civilians in the final stages of the conflict.
In a 400-page report presented in parliament on Friday, the commission said it was satisfied the military`s strategy had given the highest priority to protecting the civilian population.

Sri Lanka: Report Fails to Advance Accountability
Saturday, 17 December 2011 - 7:32 PM SL Time
|
New York) The report of the Sri Lankan government`s Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) disregards the worst abuses by government forces, rehashes longstanding recommendations, and fails to advance accountability for victims of Sri Lanka`s civil armed conflict, Human Rights Watch said today. The serious shortcomings of the 388-page report, which was posted on a government website on December 16, 2011, highlight the need for an international investigative mechanism into the conflict as recommended by the United Nations Secretary-General`s Panel of Experts in April.

After avoiding service for more than 9 months, and despite statements by Colombo that Sri Lanka`s President Mahinda Rajapakse is not answerable to US Courts, Rajapakse-appointed counsel from the lobby firm of Patton Boggs filed a motion with the District Court of District of Columbia for `enlargement of time to respond to the complaint` related to the legal action, 11-cv-00235, by three Tamil plaintiffs sponsored by Tamils Against Genocide (TAG), a US-based activist group. Legal observers expressed surprise at the filing, which, in addition to effecting waiver of service, also attempts to set the time window for response pleading tied to a discretionary act by Judge Kotelly on seeking view of the US State Department.

TNA demands international mechanism for accountability in Sri Lanka
Monday, 19 December 2011 - 7:12 PM SL Time
|
Calling upon the international community to establish a mechanism for accountability to bring to book the perpetrators of war crimes during the last stages of Eelam War that ended in May 2009, The Tamil National Alliance on Monday said that the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission report categorically fails to effectively and meaningfully deal with issues of accountability.
Recalling that many Tamil civilians, direct victims of the war, deposed before the LLRC, TNA leader R. Sampanthan said that the findings of the LLRC offend the dignity of these victims.
