Sri Lanka seen needing skills to exploit ocean resources
Tuesday, 6 December 2011 - 6:02 AM SL Time

Sri Lanka must develop research institutes and skilled manpower to exploit ocean resources being discovered around the island, a senior academic said.
Oil and gas deposits are not confined only to the Mannar or Cauvery basins with new surveys indicating their presence elsewhere around the island as well, said Dhammika Tantrigoda, senior professor of geophysics of the university of Sri Jayewardenepura.

Sri Lanka must think of introducing academic disciplines into the university curriculum if it is really interested in harnessing non-living ocean resources in the seas surrounding the island, he told the annual sessions of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science.

Plan to ease exam pressure on Lankan kids
Friday, 9 December 2011 - 10:01 AM SL Time

Early this week, a discussion regarding the Sri Lankan school syllabus, presided over by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, took place at the president`s residence, Temple Trees, in Colombo. Of the many things, two stark issues that seem to have somehow gone unnoticed for several decades were debated.

The first was the compilation of Lankan local school textbooks distributed by the government free of charge to all the schools (public and private) around the country. The president, addressing the committee, stressed on fashioning textbooks to capture the imagination of young minds. If textbooks are revised to hold a child`s interest, it would be one of the greatest legacies the current educationists can contribute to the country`s education system. For textbooks used by schools in Sri Lanka to say the least are bland. They are full of boring information. They are certainly not volumes a child would like to pick up out of interest.

Ranil s Lack Of Honour
Sunday, 11 December 2011 - 7:35 AM SL Time

Political parties are like a restaurant. You do not have to get up and pay, but everybody does. It is an honor system. Ranil Wickremesinghe, however, is a politician without honour.
Honour and its cousin shame are what cause most political transitions. They have no relation to Ranil. In Italy and Greece, Prime Ministers stepped down when their positions became untenable. In the UK, Gordon Brown stepped down after losing an election. This is generally the pattern worldwide except in dictatorships.

CARS UNLOADED AT HAMBANTOTA ONLY
Monday, 12 December 2011 - 6:10 AM SL Time

Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) will permit car importers to unload their cargo from March 2012 only in the Hambantota Port, a proposal that several car dealers have opposed.
SLPA chairman Dr. Priyath Wickrama revealed to LAKBIMAnEWS that this decision will be implemented no matter who opposes it. We cannot wait for everyone`s consent, he said.
This measure will be strictly followed as the Colombo Port is highly congested, has less parking facilities after the expansion of roads, and less port terminals. Moreover, shippers are also under pressure in Colombo, he said.

Nishantha Ranatunga s re-entry to SLC should be stopped at all costs
Tuesday, 13 December 2011 - 7:37 AM SL Time

It is indeed tragic that Sri Lanka Cricket has got into the financial imbroglio that it is faced today. It has caught global attention by it, even prompting the South African Test and ODI team players, to say that they wished their Lankan opponents were paid their earnings prior to the start of the tour! That was the solidarity and sympathy to the Sri Lankans, and a team they respected.

There is a huge simmering crisis within Sri Lanka Cricket with players and officials not being paid. No one seems to know in which direction Sri Lanka Cricket is heading! Thumping overdrafts to be settled. But, the crux of the matter is, where did it all start?

What Is a Black Hole?
Monday, 19 December 2011 - 8:02 AM SL Time

What Is a Black Hole?

A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light can not get out. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. This can happen when a star is dying.

Because no light can get out, people can`t see black holes. They are invisible. Space telescopes with special tools can help find black holes. The special tools can see how stars that are very close to black holes act differently than other stars.

How Big Are Black Holes?

Herath spins Sri Lanka to famous win
Friday, 30 December 2011 - 5:19 AM SL Time

As predicted the Durban Test was a one-sided affair, except that it was the no-hopers from Sri Lanka who were doing the dominating. A year that has gone rapidly downhill for Sri Lanka since their World Cup final appearance in April, including an interminable run of series defeats and a bankrupt board struggling to pay players, ended on the most unexpected of highs as they secured their first Test success in South Africa.

A Sri Lanka victory that will rank alongside the path-breaking one at The Oval 15 years ago as the greatest in their history was within reach as South Africa`s batting crumbled after lunch on the fourth day at Kingsmead. The parties in Sri Lanka were delayed by a long stand between AB de Villiers and Dale Steyn, who batted out most of the final session before Rangana Herath struck minutes before close to ease any anxiety building up. The final three wickets went down in four deliveries and a fantastic year for Test cricket ended with the biggest upset of 2011.
