Pawns of Peace: a Norwegian synonym for monumental diplomatic failure
Sunday, 13 November 2011 - 5:30 PM SL Time

Norway, with the publication of the report - Pawns of Peace: Evaluation of Norwegian Peace Efforts in Sri Lanka, 1997-2009 - finally admitted on Friday, what we knew all along its 12-year involvement in bringing peace to the island nation was a political disaster, despite the carefully-calculated spin applied over the catalogue of significant failures, in the very lengthy document.

Then, in the same breath, it went on to say that Norway cannot be solely held responsible for the final outcome which saw the elimination of the LTTE. Seasoned political analysts view it as a futile attempt to deviate the criticism from the liberal establishment for the debacle which cost many lives in the island and a colossal sum of money for Norwegian taxpayers.

Sharad Pawar attacked: Home ministry to review security of all VIPs
Friday, 25 November 2011 - 8:59 AM SL Time

NEW DELHI: The home ministry, which decides security cover of VIPs on the basis of `actual` threat perception, will review security of all ministers in the wake of attack on agriculture minister Sharad Pawar and may increase the number of personal security officers (PSOs) which are given to them considering their `position`.

At present, most ministers including Pawar are given six PSOs (two each round the clock) and two house guards as part of `positional` security cover under `Y` category.

`Though today`s incident has nothing to do with giving less or more number of PSOs to ministers, the matter will be reviewed. The ministers may be given additional PSOs for proximate security,` said a senior official.

Wednesday, 30 November 2011 - 5:05 PM SL Time

Chinese contractors building a new port in southern Sri Lanka have finished blasting and clearing a rock blocking the entrance channel whose discovery after construction began had sent the project cost up sharply.

The additional blasting and dredging required to clear the rock at the Hambantota port, which was officially opened in November 2010, had been delayed by the monsoon.

The extent of the rock at the entrance was underestimated during initial surveys and the extra requirement for expensive underwater blasting and dredging raised the basin excavation and channel dredging costs by almost half.
