Malinga Retained In Category One In Spite Of Test Snub

Much-delayed player contracts finally ready

Out of favour left arm seamer Thilina Thushara, who last wore his national crest on November 19, 2010 while playing against West Indies in the first Test in Galle, has not been handed a main Central Player Contract for 2011/12 while new found Lankan opener Lahiru Thirimanne has made it into the first twenty names when the National Selectors penned down their preferences for the next year.

Though the previous contracts for 2010 expired at the end of February 2011, the new contracts were delayed at various stages due to different reasons, until they were finalised a few days ago.

Amendments To Cricket Playing Conditions - ICC Puts An End To Runners

West Indies` tour of Bangladesh, which begins with a Twenty20 on October 11, will be the first international series under the ICC`s revised playing conditions, which are effective from October 1. The amendments are only applicable to international cricket.

The ICC`s cricket committee had made the recommendations after its meeting in London in May and they were passed by the executive board at the annual general meeting in Hong Kong in June.

Sri Lanka v Pakistan in UAE, 2011 - Schedule, Fixtures

Sri Lanka`s 2011 tour of Pakistan will be played out across three venues in the United Arab Emirates instead of Pakistan due to the prevailing security situation in the host country.

Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, the Dubai International Cricket Stadium (also known as the Dubai Sports City Cricket Stadium) in Dubai and the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium in Sharjah will play host to three Test matches, five ODIs and a T20 match.

Happy To Win Tournament: Lasith

Chennai, Oct 10 (IANS) Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga was adjudged Man of the Series for his all-round performance for Mumbai Indians who on Sunday night won the Nokia Champions League T20 tournament here defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 31 runs in the final.

Malinga, who also won the Golden Wicket award for the most number of wickets, 10, said: I am happy that our team won. I am in the Mumbai Indians team as a bowler, but I managed to score a few runs also.

A concerned Sri Lanka Cricket is making a concerted effort to put the runaway School Cricket Train back on its track. The premier cricket authority in Sri Lanka has noted with alarm the grave uncontrollable situation that is prevailing in the school cricket system where a school side plays more than 20 matches in a season that lasts arguably for 4-5 months. The season generally takes off in November and goes on till March while December is left off for the GCE O Level examination.

ICC Ends Mandatory Use Of Decision Review System

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP)

The International Cricket Council has ended the mandatory use of the Decision Review System and instead will leave it up to participating nations to decide if they wish to use the technology.

ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat says after a meeting of the Executive Board that `there are some who are not convinced by its reliability.`

The India cricket board has been a strong critic of the system. Lorgat says the game`s governing body would `work with interested parties to improve the system.`

Machine Simulates Deliveries Of Malinga, Afridi

ProBatter available at Dubai Sports City

Dubai: Pakistan batsmen can get some practice in against the deadly yorkers of Lasith Malinga before facing the real thing in the series against Sri Lanka in the UAE, which starts on Tuesday.

The International Cricket Council Global Cricket Academy`s ProBatter video system can simulate the experience of facing Malinga.

The screen displays a footage of Malinga running in and at the point of release a real ball is fired as if from the hand of the bowler exactly replicating his slinging action.

Sri Lankan Team Arrive In UAE For Pakistan Series

Abu Dhabi: The Sri Lankan cricket team led by Tillakaratne Dilshan arrived yesterday afternoon for their Test series against Pakistan starting with the first Test on Tuesday at the Zayed International Cricket Stadium.

Dilshan`s squad arrived in Dubai yesterday afternoon and proceeded by bus to their hotel in Abu Dhabi.

CRICKET: Sri Lanka skipper Tillekeratne Dilshan insisted to bat at number five instead of opening the innings which will relieve the pressure and add more cushion to the middle order during the upcoming Pakistan Test series to be staged in the desert capital in Abu Dhabi from October 18 to November 25.

Sri Lanka will play three Tests, five ODIs and T20 in their gruelling five week tour in the United Arab Emirates.

Five-Wicket Khan Put Pakistan On Top In First Test

Left-arm paceman Junaid Khan chipped in with a maiden five-wicket haul to help Pakistan bundle Sri Lanka for a mere 197-run total on the first day of the opening Test here on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old, playing in only his second Test, with 5-38 and was ably supported by pace partner Umar Gul (2-37) and off-spinner Saeed Ajmal (2-56) after Pakistan put Sri Lanka into bat on a greenish Abu Dhabi stadium pitch.

Sri Lanka`s Bowlers Fail To Trouble Pakistan

Taufiq Umar hit his sixth Test century and fellow opener Mohammad Hafeez scored 75 as Pakistan took a firm grip on the first Test against Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi stadium here on Wednesday.

The left-hander made an undefeated 109 and added 118 for the opening wicket with Hafeez and another unbroken 141 for the third wicket with Azhar Ali (60 not out) as Pakistan reached 259-1 by stumps, a lead of 62 with eight wickets intact.

Abu Dhabi: Kumar Sangakkara, who stood between Pakistan and victory with a marathon second innings effort of 161 in the first Test in the UAE, says he is feeling `fantastic and great` to continue his battle on the final day.

`It would have been nice if I had I got it in the first innings but it was a tough fight and one of my better hundreds. But there is still work left and if we can get the first session through we can put some pressure on Pakistan,` said the former skipper after posting his 26th hundred.

Sanga and Prasanna Foil Pakistan`s Victory Bid

ABU DHABI, Oct 22 (AFP) - Kumar Sangakkara hit his eighth double hundred and Prasanna Jayawardene notched up a fighting century to thwart Pakistan`s hopes of victory to salvage a draw for Sri Lanka in the first Test here on Saturday.

Sangakkara scored 211 during a marathon near eleven-hour stay while Prasanna made 120, for his fourth century, as Sri Lanka piled on 483 to frustrate Pakistan on the fifth and final day at Abu Dhabi stadium.

Sri Lanka Cricket Considering Re-Appointing Sangakkara As Captain

Local media quoting Sri Lanka Cricket sources reported that the cricket authorities of the island are trying to approach Kumara Sangakkara to get him to accept the captaincy of the national team again.

Media reports say that a proposal is to be made to the ex-captain to accept the captaincy from January next year.

Sangakkara resigned from the captaincy immediately after the Cricket World Cup this year.

When is the nightmare going to end for Sri Lanka? On the 3rd day of the 1st Test against Pakistan they were on top with a lead of 300 plus. When will the day come when we do our selections on the lines of performances? It is true that most top players have lean periods and some take long while there are those that recover fast enough to be selected for the next game. Good past performances quite justly stand in good stead for consideration should be given for any player with a shinning past record.

Sri Lanka`s mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis tops the inaugural ICC world Twenty20 rankings announced yesterday. Reigning world Twenty20 champions England top the inaugural rankings announced for the popular format of the game.

England, who won the the third edition of the World Twenty20 under Paul Collingwood in the West Indies last year, have a rating of 127 points and lead second placed Sri Lanka by just one point.

`Lot of critics has said that Twenty20 is a bad influence on the game but personally I feel that it has been a very positive influence. Players have become better. Batsmen have brought in many strokes from Twenty20 to Test cricket and created a much better situation that in the past.

Battling Draw Boosts Sri Lanka - Second Test begins In Dubai Today

Sri Lanka batsman Mahela Jayawardene believes his team has the momentum going into the second Test against Pakistan beginning Wednesday.

Kumar Sangakkara`s double century helped Sri Lanka fight back from conceding a first innings lead of 314 in the first Test to earn a draw in Abu Dhabi last week.

`We definitely came out of a hole,` Jayawardene said. `I think that shows a lot of character.

`If you can come away from a test match like that, it gives you a lot of confidence knowing that we`re still in the series and that we have an opportunity to come back at them.`

Pakistan Seizes Initiative Against Sri Lanka

Pakistan`s bowlers gave their side an early initiative by bowling out Sri Lanka for 239 on Wednesday on the first day of the second cricket test at Dubai International Stadium.

Pakistan replied strongly with openers Taufeeq Umar (20 not out) and Mohammad Hafeez (18 not out) taking their team to 42-0 by the close.

Earlier, fast bowlers Umar Gul (3-78) and Junaid Khan (2-57) wrecked Sri Lanka`s top order after the visitors won the toss and opted to bat.

Sri Lanka Claw Their Way Back Against Pakistan

DUBAI Ultra-cautious batting by opener Tharanga Paranavitana and former captain Kumar Sangakkara in fading light edged Sri Lanka back into the second Test against Pakistan as the pair reached 88 for one at the close of play on the third day yesterday.

Sri Lanka still trail Pakistan by 76 runs but had Paranavitana (42 not out) and Sangakkara (29 not out) to thank for staving off the opponents` attack after the fall of Lahiru Thirimanne for eight when the score was 22.

Pakistan Win Hong Kong Sixes

All-rounder Abdul Razzaq and Sohail Tanvir hammered half-centuries as Pakistan swept to a 35-run victory over England to be crowned champions at the Karp Group Hong Kong Sixes at the Kowloon Cricket Club on Sunday.

Pakistan captain Razzaq hit a scintillating 63 not out and was matched stroke for stroke by the left-handed Tanvir, 58, as Pakistan set an imposing target of 155. It was beyond England who were bowled out with two balls left in the final eight-ball over.
